This is a great shot of Ace Sign Shop in Perth Amboy, NJ, circa the 1930s.
Among the signpainters shown are, Dave Smith (the original owner. Jack Youngberg, John Gasper and Sol Freedman, who was the NJ Lightweight Boxing Champ in 1929.

That's great! What a classic pic. Do you have the print? or a higher res. digital image? That would look good on the wall next to my alphabet of old lead type.
Yes, I have the print - (11 x 14) and the negative. Unfortunately, I lent the negative to someone in NJ in January so I need to get it back from him. I've been meaning to call him and bug him about it.
Somehow or another, I'll get you a copy.

The negative is now on it's way back to me from NJ. I'll figure out a way to get each of you a copy.
I have some more great old sign shop pics, maybe this weekend I'll try and post them.

Wouldn't that be a GREAT idea? Unfortunately, I don't have that many. Just a handful.

It continues to amaze me that most of the photos of sign shops from that era look like hallways. This room has some width, but still lacks windows. Many have an entry on one end and are long and narrow with high ceilings. I'd hate to work in that kind of environment today. They also crowded as many signwriters into a space as they could. We sure are abundant with luxury today!

Rick, I noticed the same thing, and the lighting or lack thereof. I doubt I would have to worry about working in those conditions, I'd never make the dress code Kimberly, you sure jogged a bunch of memories loose here. I grew up just a few miles from "Amboy", it was the closest "city" and I spent a lot of time there, cruising mainly, I can remember seeing a lot of work done by Ace Sign. Another thing, the first sign painter I had the pleasure to watch was a guy named Vitale, sorry can't remember his first name, who worked out of Rahway, he too, was at one time a prize fighter.

We have a shop here in town who's workspace similar to this. I don't know how they get anything done. All of the welding, cutting, sanding, painting is done in about a 20'x30' space. At night, they have to move everything out of the way so that they can bring their boomtruck in.
Looking at the pic, it sure make me count my blessings.
I tried to email several of you with the JPEG file of this photo but it got returned saying it was too big.
Tell you what, I will have some copies made of the negative and send you those. Ken, Bill, Bruce...make sure and send me your snail mail address.

Kimberly, I have DSL. If you will send me a big jpeg, I will see if I can print out some copies on the big inkjet. They can be printed on heavy coated paper for a very low material cost. Vic G

Bummer! I feel like I'm missing out on a great photo. I don't see anything here at my end. No link, no little red 'x' in a white box, nothin'. Oh well, enjoy.

Sonny, Good idea...I took the framed 11 x 14 version with me when I went to his Conclave in February but he may not have seen it. I have his email, I'll ask him.
Vic, Great idea, I'll be in touch!
John, Don't feel left out.. I just emailed you a copy of it.
