Can a custom colour can be accomplished in a matte or satin finish on vinyl?

I'm doing some indoor exhibition work and would like to know if there is a source for matte or satin finish vinyl. Intermediate vinyl does work for this sort of thing, but it's limited in colour selection.
I'm curious to know if vinyl could be painted in a satin or matte finish, and if so, how?

I really appreciate any feedback and thoughts on this.

Thanks a bunch folks!
Janette

Janette, we have rolled paint onto vinyl and cut it afterwards with success, but I don't recommend rollering.

What works better is to screenprint the color onto the vinyl. The screenprinting inks bond solidly, the coat is thinner and cuts about the same as ordinary vinyl. It's been a while, but as I remember it, the finish was a soft gloss.

You might be able to airbrush it. Vic G

a year or so ago i did a job for Alabama Public Television.
the job required i use a flat finish on vinyl to decrease glare from the studio lights.

i used enamel receptive vinyl with great results, the only down side was the application tape did not grasp the flat painted viny well, making for worrisome application.

i would use the most agressive application tape for this reason.

the application works fine with a semi-gloss finish.

Janette,

Any vinyl screen ink with a flattener will work fine. You can even spray or screen the ink on and then run it through your plotter if you'd like. If you need a specific PMS color, many screen ink suppliers can custom mix it for you at little or no additional costs.

If you go this route, you may want to call Mid-South Screen Supply, Birmingham, AL .... 1-888-414-7036. I buy all of my screen inks from them.

Hi Nettie,

I've used flattening powder mixed with frog juice to take the shine out. I just sprayed the whole sign when it was done, so that everything had the same sheen. Make sure you strain it really well, as the flattening powder can dry and leave white bumps.

looks like lots of workable choices already but I'll add one. I recently needed a matte finish on sdome digital printing. In my case I was looking for a high performance product. Bob G. refered me to Avery for a matte clear that was available in cast vinyl. My job was an edge job & the standard foil colors maintained the matte finish of the clear I printed on. A fairly good match of your background color could be achieved on the edge. Anyway, it's not paint, but one more option if it's of any use in making your decision.

This shot picks up some flash from my camera, but it really is very low gloss in reality.

Subsurface graphics on back side of non-glare plex is also a suitable approach for some jobs.

Hi Nettie,
We regularly spray vinyl with Grip Flex paint. http://www.signfinishes.com The finish comes out satin. You can coat with matte clear for further flatness. We also have screened on color with vinyl inks. Both processes soften the vinyl a bit.

The colour my customer was specifying in this instance (pms 535) may be accomplished with a close match using arlon intermediate "light wedgewood blue". It's not a match ...but it's in the neighbourhood, and may be acceptable. We'll see.

However, I'm very appreciative for the responses, and have printed them out as I know this dilemma will crop up again, and I may not be so lucky next time.

Doug, I am not able to see your pic, ... broken link here, but I get the gist of your suggestion, and it sounds pretty interesting.

Thank everyone for your solutions!

Janette
