Using HOK pinstripe colors, not to be cleared over, you have to mix catalyst into the paint, right?
How much catalyst to paint?

Yes Ben, the catalyst holds to key for gloss as well as the ability to last, without the catalyst, wear would be short as well as a semi gloss to dull finish.

In a 1 ounce mixing or medical cup, using approximently 1/2 ounce of paint, maybe 7 drops of catalyst should do the trick. If if is hard to get 7 drops of Cat, then with the top open on the can, insert a popsicle stick in the catalyst can until the stick is wet 1/3 of the way, then mix into the paint.

Hope this helps [Smile]

I also use HOK striping enamels & have found that I can dispence the catalyst out of an "Easy-Pour" bottle, the 4oz. size. It's not that hard to get 6 or 7 drops out.
I don't fill the bottle up, I fill it with about 2-3 oz at a time. This way it's always fresh. You can also keep it refrigerated for a longer shelf life.
Try www.lazerlines.com for bottles.

Mr J -
I spoke to you on the phone about ten years ago, about weekend workshops you were doing at the time. Are you still doing them? If so, where can I find a schedule?
Thanks

Hey Ben,

this probably isnt the right thing for me to do, answering this question but what the heck. "I got rights"

From what I have heard and read in the past year, MrJ is working on a set of Video tapes to sell regarding the pinstriping classes he used to put on, I believe he decided that would be easier than doing it in person (correct me if I am wrong please MrJ). So if he isnt doing the hands on version and the video version isnt ready yet, you might want to contact Alan Johnson. He ran two weekend BOOT CAMPS last year, one of which I attended. His boot camp was a great time and he had enlisted the help from a few other great artists, Bill Reidel, and Russ Mowry. All three of those gentlemen taught about 8 of us a bunch of different methods of doing different graphic effects and lettering and pinstriping. I would actually consider going again I had so much fun. There were people from as far north as Mass, and as far south as Virginia in my boot camp. we all had fun.

There are also a few other people that run boot camps or pinstriping getaway weekends. Bob Bond I know did one. Tony Perez did a few. and of course the guys who spawned Alans boot camp... Mike Lavalle and John Hannukaine.
so there is plenty out there and if you cant meet those schedules there are always the meets that you can attend. there is always somebody willing to show you a trick or two

Hi everbody. As far as my "Workshops" are concerned, I did stop them for a couple of reasons. One is that I was traveling for both Roland & Sign Business and it was just too much to handle all of it a one time. The second reason is it takes a lot of work(just ask the guys that have them)and I thought it would be better to try and reach more students thru "videos", and my "Pinstriping Kit". Maybe I should re-think this part. Although we are selling a lot of the kits,I really miss the "one-on-one" that the workshops offer.
In my years of holding the workshops at my studio, I have made a lot of friends, and have had the pleasure of working with(& teaching) some of the BEST artists in world.I have also learned a lot from them. This is something that money can not buy!
Maybe we should have a re-union? Maybe if I got enough interest we could start up the workshops again.

Well MrJ.

I for one am always interseted in learning more from people so you could definitely put me on your list of people interested if you do decide to do a hands on workshop of some sort. I find that the video tapes just dont do it justice alone, now maybe video and hands on combined would be the best effect of all, but that too increases the price, and somewhere these things have to be cost effective.

So anyway, keep me in mind if you do decide to do something.

Mr J - you can add my name to Harris' as one to contact should you ever decide to hold a workshop again.
Harris - where was you "boot camp" held, and where can I find info on where, when and by who another one is coming up? I feel like I have too much to learn to rely on videos and books at this point, though I have bought some of each. I am just one of those people who have to get their hands on things and see how they are supposed to work in order to learn.
Thanks to all for your answers. This BB is great!
