Ya-all remember the traveling barrel project that went around last year.....well let's do it again, only different.
The barrel was a lot of fun, but expensive to ship from location to location. I spent over 20 dollars to sent it to monty!
My idea is to start a banner, oh, say one that's 30"x6' with a heading that i will letter to kick it off. Give me your ideas on what to say in the heading.
I will letter the heading and then add my signature in the signing area....at that point I will sent the banner to the closest one to me and that person will do the same.
Through postings on the board from the people who have it you'll be able to track it and request your turn when it's in your area.
About the signatures, don't be a hog! use a small area. I don't care if you use vinyl letters or paint. Keep it as small as possible for you to be able to do. The less space taken by each the more sigs we can obtain.
You must swear that when you get it you will sign it and have it back on the road within 5 working days or so.
Now..what do we do with it when it's done? Auction it? Donate it to the museum? Let me have it? (hehe!) You tell me.

Oh the barrel, and where is it today? Does the banner get to visit only certain parts of letterville like the barrel? Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to ya...
The Barrel was won at the Letterville auction site by a nice fella from up around your parts for $ 155.
I agree that it would be easier using a banner instead, although The Barrel was fun because you could put stuff in it.
Terry, how about using this thread to start the list. Like this...
1) Terry Teague 2) Michael Boone 3) Joey 4) Me Etc.
Just an idea...but what the heck do I know ?

Another neat thing about the barrel was t hand deliver it when possible instead of shipping. I realize some people would have too far to go, but for others it is a great way to meet some new friends.
Troy Haas brought the barrel to my shop(His shop is only 45 miles away), and I delivered it to CJ Allan(about 140 miles). I had never met either of them before, and now think of them both as special friends.
Lez do it.

Yea, an C.J brought the barrel to me. Maybe we can make a relay banner out of this, hand carried by sign crafters accross the country. Surely there is somebody between me and the Birmingham bunch

"I started out with nothing and still have most of it left"
Sorry to mention this, but truth is truth, namely, sign people are the worst at procrastination. If they keep the banner 4-5 days it will actually get kept 4 to 5 weeks by one person.
Point is, it has to move much faster or only 30 people will get a chance to sign on it in a year's time!
If it ends up at a letterhead meet, the banner will fill totally up with names. There will be a bunch of dissapointed letterheads who are on the list the banner will never make it to. The whole point of it being sent from shop to shop is because the project is unique. Its not unique anymore if it lands at a meet.
It broke my heart to see the barrel travel just through the midwest and some southern states. It was suppose to go much further. Time ran out, space ran out. It got lost for 2 months. Others just couldn't think what to put on it so they just stared at it for 3 weeks. Bill gave it to Fred, who left it at his divorced wife's house who wouldn't let him in....that kind of stuff happens.
If you want the project to succeed, it needs to be very well organized.
1. people sign up 2. the first one gets the banner, he calls you to ask where to send it to next. 3. When the second letterhead gets the banner, he calls you to see where to send it next. and so on.....
That way you will get to meet a lot of letterheads by phone, and it is a special treat. Also you will know exactly where the banner is and if you need to get them on the stick to get it done and shipped.
The other problem is that of paint not drying on the banner. It may get rolled up and the paint becomes glue....end of banner.
If you could make a game of it, so we could all see how fast we could get the banner to move across the country, that would be a great deal of fun to watch. Shipping it out the very day you get the banner would be the "bomb", then posting the progress on the BB.
just FYI

Great idea Terry! There is already a banner with the new Letterville logo on it that we made when Gail and Devo were here. We all signed it and then it went to England and finally Australia. It was shipped to the Georgia meet in Oct but arrived late and was returned to Oz. Wonder if we could locate it and get it moving again?
Here's another idea. I can't believe nobody has ever come up with a design about our channel or other Letterville craziness. These designs could be offered on aprons, mugs, shirts...you get the idea. We'll help you market your design before you even spend a penny producing the product in mass. If it proves to be a winner, you make the profits and pay us a small percentage.
The banner will be a piece of enamel receptive banner cloth. No hems or grommets or rope. Think of it as a canvas. There will be a 2" area around the banner of extra material so that when it reaches its final destination it can be stretched onto a frame for display. The entire background will be painted. If you use paint to sign one day then you should be able to roll up the next. Do not use staples to hang the banner on your easel unless necessary. Use tape.
It is not my intention or desire to organize the hell out of this project although it is my wish that as many people in as many states as possible get the opportunity if they so wish.
Once again if you contain yourself and sign small then there should be no problem in getting 2 to 3 hundred signatures.
Invite other artists in your area to come to your shop to sign or hand deliver to the next person and make a new friend.

Hi Terry!!! Great idea and I guess we Canadians will have to organise our own thing since this is a U.S. project.

Hey...Maybe we could organise something that works better than a U.S. election!!!!!!!!

Count me in! There is a large gap in letterheads from so Fla to the other states BUT when it gets to me, I'll make sure Nettie and Cheryl Lucas or whoever else wants it, gets it and Pat Neve isn't that far from me either.

Maybe Fed-Ex will sponsor it. They will plaster their name on everything here...from the Washington Redskins to Pandas (neither of which has survived while on public display).
If there is a clear agenda set up like a concert series (you can print t-shirts of the banners world tour and organize meets/parties for it's arrival) you'll know where it's going and who gets it next before you even send it out.
Set a deadline, a schedule and stick to it. That's my take on it.

Send the banner over here if ya want, or bring it in person if ya ain't afraid.......hahahaha!!!

I guess I won't be able to sign the banner as we are not ALLOWED to use push pins, staples,or anything other than tape to hang with.Guess a drawing board that is also a hand perforating background(that tape won't stick to) is a little to ol'timey since the invent of electro pounce! You would think that with a 2" border for stretching on a frame(going to use glue I guess)wouldn't pass the perfection test than SOMEONE will be preforming on it. Gosh, thats EXACTLY how I sign my name too! Oh Yeah it can ONLY be paint or vinyl(I forgot)

Pat.....Read it again, then maybe you'll understand it. I said not to use staples unless necessary.
I won't be the one stretching the banner, whoever ends up with it will or won't as they see fit.
When the banner comes to you, do whatever seems right. I don't care if you put it on the shop floor and scoot around on it with your butt! Just do your thang and send it on to the next person.

Did someone mention how big the banner needs to be? I have a 3' by 5' with hems and ropes. Or a roll of the ready to cut grommeted (2'). I could donate one of those mentioned. Or should it be bigger? I just skimmed through this post. Please forgive me if I missed something (if it wasn't a photo in color, that is) back to the grind, Deb

Terry great idea!!! Would love to be part of this. I had another Idea some what the same. Every one could do a 2'X 2' banner(or any other size) with no gromets ropes etc... and mail it to a designated place and have them all put together like a blanket. you could do the main peice(top), the heading and it would be like one big blanket. Just a thought, keep us informed on what to do.
See ya

I think it is a wonderful idea to see if a distributor would donate such a banner; we must keep the shipping to a reasonable cost too. I like the idea of passing it along since it is more personal and connected, and also the piece banner sounds practical too.

Maybe I can deliver it to a few letterheads in Ohio in the area! Send it on over when you can! Do you think every three days will be an average stay? Keep us posted on events so we may have the opportunity to get a multiple signing on occasion. That should speed it up! (just a thought)
