Canon Image Class C2100. This is a model being discontinued by Canon and is currently selling for around $2,500 - $3,000.....which is half it's normal price.
My brother sells Canon equipment and said that this tabloid capable color laser is a very nice printer. Canon has taken over the largest market share for color printers, copiers, etc and for good reason.
they offer this unit for $2,400. Stay away from the cheapie brands (Konica, mita, etc) and the Tektronix w/color wax refills.....they don't have a good repair history overall.
Good luck.

A year or so ago we did a lot of research into getting a color laser tabloid size and we were leaning towards the QMS. I can't rember the exact printer but it was a really awesome machine. They are made by Minolta I think. We didn't get one but we probably will someday. We are still using a Epson tabloid sized inkjet.

John brings up a good point. If lightnin' speed isn't an issue, take a good look at the Epson 1280 large format inkjet printer. It ranked number one in Digital Graphics mag. I own it myself, and with some special paper, the output is so real it's unreal. And all for an affordable $500.
You won't regret this if you're looking for something that can knock out large photo quality comps....but if you have the jack....check out the Canon laser.

warning on the QMS - we had one here in Sydney, nothing but trouble, crap service & at one stage they couldn't even supply toner! The service guy didn't carry parts etc etc We now have a Xerox docucolor 1250 copier/printer - very good machine but expensive. You need to keep it busy to pay for it but service speed & print quality is great

We have a 1270 and we love it. I also have a lexmark 1200 dpi. My 1270 (don't know how much the 1280 is better than the 1270) prints better at 360dpi than the Lexmark does at 1200. It also is a lot cheaper to run, it uses a lot less ink. It is quite and really fast for an ink-jet. As far as photo quality it is the best I've seen. We print tee shirt transfers with ours (hot peel) and we have had shirts get washed bookoos of times without fading. We have a web site selling tees and we have tons of repeat business so our customers must have good luck with the tees also. We even had a shirt of our own get left wet in the basket for a week and it didn't fade, it just molded. Sawgrass systems, I beleive know has a sublimation setup for the 1280 which would make a great addition for making extra goodies to sell at a sign shop but it is not a good idea to use a sublimation printer setup as a regular printer due to consumables cost.

I installed a new xerox tektronics 7700gx a couple of weeks age.
22 ppm full color 1200 dpi auto duplex offset catch tray (sorter) 12 x 18 full bleed feeds 90 lb index (from the paper drawer) feeds 110 lb coated cornwall card and 110 lb jensen gloss from the bypass tray
Print quality and calibration are outstanding, better than my color copier.
Pricy to buy, reasonable to low printing cost for full color laser.
If you have the volume I would seriously look at this puppy. I got it (loaded) for 13k cdn, 3 year warranty is goung to cost me about $2600

It is all about volume if you need an inkjet or laser. We are seriously considering getting a laser someday just to do flyers and stuff with. Have an "everything a business needs" kinda thing, form signs to shirts to flyers and business cards. If we get one, we are going to advertise and put a big sign out front "COLOR COPIES AVAILABLE HERE!" Hardly anybody offers color copies around my area and especially not at a reasonable price so I figure that offering color copies will help offset some of the cost. I'll just let my wife do all of that stuff, maybe it'll keep her busy.
