I need to price 2 6'x14' sandblasted signs for a good customer. I know there going to get one other price from a shop works only with redwood. The sign is a simple layout. Two color. Just Big. The sign will be attached to two posts from behind. I planned to use 1.5 HDU and back it with MDO. I was thinking of pricing them at about $9200.00. Will the MDO hold up? I'm looking for ideas on the backing and see if I'm in line with my pricing. We done quite a few sandblasted signs, just nothing this big. Thanks.....

My experience will not help you as far as pricing, but I remember someone suggesting using dibond as a backer. I wouldnt chance the mdo for the backer myself unless you are sure you can seal it real well.
Maybe someone will jump in with some helpful info.

Robert, that comes out to $54.76 per square foot. I would bump this up many more dollars for: (1) the shear aggravation of something that big and (2) getting the proper backing for it. (If this is done in redwood or cedar, it will take a six-pack of folks just to turn it over to paint the backside!!! Not to mention the glue-up). My last monster signs like this was 3 5'x15' routered cypress 15 years ago and I got $60.00 per S.F. then. HDU will definately be your best bet if you can swing it. I would try my hardest to sell the HDU vs wood at a minimum of $65.00 per S.F. for $10,920.00 and THEY pick it up and arrange their own installation. Good luck to ya !!!

The last one I did close to this size was 6'x 10' and I did two of them with a discount for the second one so they averaged out at 90.00 a square foot.
That was clear heart verticle grain red wood and that was 4 years back.
It was a pleasure doing them...even more pleasure picking up the check.
Since you asked ...I'd steer clear of the MDO and opt out for Dibond applied with west systems Epoxy, ruff it up good and drill 1/4" holes on a grid based on 6" centers to assure a good grip.
Good luck...oh by the way if I were doing this today I'd bid it at $125.00 a square foot...and keep in mind I'm in Oklahoma where everything is below market.
