First of all I have Window ME.... I have been considering upgrading to 2000 Pro. I have inherited some errors on my drive that won't allow scandisk to perform, and as a result cannot defrag, so I will be slooowwwing down soon. Does anyone feel that the 2000 install might probably cure this problem without a reformat. I just don't have the time to reload. It is a forever job nowdays, with all the programs and such.

Jack...I don't know about an overinstall of 2000 would fix your specific problem, but 2000 is very stable operating system. I only have one problem with it, and I believe it would affect you too. The Roland driver for win 2000 in no good and trying to cut with it will crash your system on a regular basis. Just a forewarning if that would be a concern. I use Win 2000 for the design work and Win 98 on the laptop to do the cutting.

Dave, I'm wondering if the same occurs with all the new windows progs,,, even XP... I use the memory hog ME, but it is just an unglorified 98...

Dave, I just called Roland techs, at Ordway Sign in Calif. , and they say they have had no problems. Have you heard of others with your same dilema?

Jack, before you give up on your existing arrangement, reboot your computer in safe mode and see if defrag will run from there. My guess is, it will.
I have Win2000 and it is not bulletproof. It blue screens less than earlier versions, however. Some of my legacy software just won't run right on 2000. Vic G

Dave, I use Win 2000 Pro at my home, on the laptop, and XP pro here in the Office. 2000 Pro has been great, very stable. XP has been just as stable, Illustrator 10, PhotoShop 6, Corel 9, and everything else I've installed on both systems work nicely. I'd opt for XP Pro though because of it's mobility. It allows you remote desktop connectivity ( Extremely useful if you're away from the office and need to do something on your computer, or if you're having troubles and have a fiend somewhere else that could help you. Nice stuff. Another option that we're considering here is switching to Apple Macintosh with Virtual Windows.

nobody ever listens to me....if your running older softwear(flexi, signlab, signmate, casmate,inspire, signwizard) YOU ARE BETTER OFF RUNNING 98 OR 98SE....these programs were designed to run in them..not in ME, 2000, XP OR XP PRO. most of the older sign programs are 16 bit and adapted to 32 bit so it will run in 98/98SE....and your really askin for problems if you try to run these in an NTSF type program(WINN 2000/XPPRO)

Jack...Not only have I run into problems with Rolands 2000 driver but so has Gail in Australia. And several of her friens as well...All are back to using win 98...at least for cutting from Corel.
The only possible thing I haven't tried is re-formatting and installing win 2000 with the FAT 32 option instead of NTFS. Roland told me the same thing "No Problems". Gail finally got a friend of hers, who is a Roland techie, to admit that YES there is a problem with the driver. I didn't need that confirmation....I knew it from the first day I installed Win 2000 and that driver.
I am considering checking out Win XP. Might even install the stuff on a buddy's puter and see if THAT combo will work.

Could someone tell me how to reboot in safemode?, I can't find the on ramp. I'm using ME.

Click Start, and then click Shut down. Click Restart, click OK, and then press and hold the CTRL key until the Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu appears. For some machines, you can use F8 instead of CTRL to bring up the Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu.
Enter the number for Safe mode, and then press ENTER. Notes In safe mode, Windows uses default settings (VGA monitor, no network, Microsoft mouse driver, and the minimum device drivers required to start Windows). You will not have access to CD-ROM drives, printers, or other devices. You can change settings as needed by clicking Start, pointing to Settings, clicking Control Panel, and double-clicking Network or System. After you finish this procedure, you need to restart your computer before Windows will start properly.

Thanks a lot... It worked, scandisk and defrag was able to complete it tasks. I had read how to troubleshoot these items, but no one ever mentioned safe mode. I don't have a clue why they won't operate under normal circumstances, but maybe that will correct itself. Thanks again, Jack

There are some issues with scandisk and defrag operating correctly while certain other programs are operating. There are programs that acess the hard drive while these utilities are running. (IE schedular) that either stop disk utilites from operating or really slow it down. One program runs in the background and is not listed in the close program window. You cannot close it. Running in safe mode does not load these TSR type prgrams thus allowing defrag and scandisk to operate correctly.
Win ME has some unique problems. Personally, I dont know a single person who likes to tweak thier machines running winME. Either win 98 se or XP seems to be the choices. I spend lots of my hobby time working at Infinity computers and make plenty of commission money removing win ME from machines.

ive said this before ....if you wana "play" get removable hard drives!!!!!! this way you can have a hard drive set up with win95B or C that you can run all your old stuff from and use it to work. then shut down and put in another hard drive loaded with ME, WIN 2000, or XP and play to youre hearts content. you can try to operate your older sign stuff from them..if it gives ya problems...so waht you got you other hard drive that works perfectly. i can even go back to my 3.11 loaded with corel 4!!!!!!!!!!
