I am bidding on a 36" circular sandblasted logo. Single sided, 1.5" thick. This will be out of red oak. I priced the oak, same price as redwood. Okay, now. The price for materials is the same for comparison. Red oak is much harder than cedar or redwood and will take longer. There is no painting or staining. Just a clear sealer and spar varnish. It will be hung inside a school auditorium. With redwood, cedar or HDU, I would go with $65.00 per square foot. With oak, since it is gonna take more preparation and longer time blasting, the price should be more. But, since there is no painting, just varnish, the finishing time is less. My bottom line came to $85.00 per square foot. The camera ready artwork is provided. There is no carving or easing of the elements. Just blasting down 1/2" and finishing with a clear finish. Just wanted to run this through the gamut here

John, You might want to use some Black Beauty or aluminum oxide to speed up the blasting. That red oak is pretty hard stuff. Clear laquer and sanding sealer work very well on red oak too. The price sounds OK to me.

If lamination etc.etc is involved go with HDU. Much simpler. I used a lot of cedar in the past but labor intensive with laminating 2x6 boards. You can still get 70$ and up per square foot.

I agree that HDU is my best option and I tried hard to sell it. This is a spec job that has to be red oak. Pre-routing is not an option for cost purposes. I will be using aluminum oxide, blasting approx 1/2" deep. After I get the job finished, I will post pics for future reference.

John, you may want to double rubber. This keeps the rubber from getting too hot and burning, leading to loss of crispness in the edge of the blast. I've done this with granite and the rubber showed no discoloration with good depth.

John, We get $125.00/sq.ft but then again we live in Jackson Hole. I've blasted some local granite with just one thickness of Anchor blast mask with good results. I have never done any oak but it can't be any harder than granite. Your price sound good as it is a fairly simple job. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

John, out here the sandblasting COST would go up $5.50 per square foot exclusive of any extra work associated with masking. I think clearcoats are more work in general simply because they are not as forgiving as colors in many situations. Your price sounds fair to me. Vic G
