"customers" that come in wanting "quotes" for their insurance over a damaged sign. I always seem to get screwed on em. Usually I just plain won't do 'em, but some time ago, I had one trick me....came in, asked for the quote to have a damaged sign replaced.....wanted all the extras, price no object and so on....then after 45 minutes with her, she said, "great! I'll give this to my insurance guy!"
grrrrrrrrrr
of course I never heard from her again, but I am sure she has already spent the money...the sign sure hasn't been replaced....just propped up along the highway.
sigh....thems the breaks.

Barry, I hear ya. I just did an insurance quote for a sign that got wiped out by an SUV. Luckily something hit me while I was typing out the quote. The guy told me that he had made the first sign but the insurance company wanted a quote from a sign company. The sign he made had plastic letters so cheap I wouldn't know where to even look for them. I quoted Gemini letters on alumalite so naturally my quote was probably 4 to 5 times what he spent to make his first version. I can just see him drooling over his potential profit. So anyway, I got smart and added a line that if I was not awarded the sign contract, that a $20.00 quote fee would apply. At least I might get compensated a little for my time.

I charge $25 for an insurance estimate if either the customer comes by the shop for it or I fax it over. $50-$125 if I have to go to a site and make the estimate. I tell the customer that the charge is applied to the invoice as a credit if we do the job. Also, most insurance companies will pay for quotes if there is a charge for them.

Brad is exactly right. That's how insurance quotes are done over here too. I used to do them when I worked in the family business and this was the only way that worked.
