Peter, sounds like a great day gone sideways!!!
I have read, but not tried, brake fluid, as a remover. I've used the easy off, works, but turns ugly on an old fibreglas boat!!

It is a bear to work with in the wind! What about using a spray painters cover-up suit with the head hood, gloves and goggles? Naw, we would look pretty silly out in the yard with that get-up on, spraying a little yellow can!
I know how you feel, man.

Spray Easy-Off on a cotton rag first and wipe around Graphics.. Or spray on loose leaf paper and set on lettering.. Doesn't get in your Eyes then!
You can control the amount that you use as well as how to neturlize(SP) it.
I hope you had Eye Wash as you did this project?

Hey Pete..............try this next time. Take a sheet of regular kitchen-type plastic food wrap, tape along the bottom of the lettering to be removed, spray on the oven cleaner and lift up the plastic, hinge style, and cover. It actually works better in the sun, won't dry out, plus keeps the fumes down a bit. You can then go do the other side while the first side is "baking".

Don't even consider brake fluid. It WILL eat into certain paints, notably lacquer. Although not used much anymore, you never know. Unfortunately, I found this out the hard way.
