I am attempting a glass gilding project and I made up something on the puter then cut paint mask to paint the outlines, shadows, etc.
I applied the mask after cleaning with Bon Ami like I'm supposed to and then cleaning it with water and a towel with a little isopropyl alcohol.
I painted the weeded areas with black one shot and let it dry for a while. When I pulled the mask off I pulled up paint in many spots. Did I let it dry too long? How long should I wait before I pull off the mask? I am afraid of pulling it off too soon and having really jagged edges.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

You already answered your first question, you waited too long. The best time to pull a mask up when you are using One Shot is right away, the edge won't be as harsh. I'm no glass gold expert by any means, but I think you will find you are gonna have a little trouble painting the outlines first, especially using One Shot with a mask, it's almost impossible to gild right up to the and over the outline because of the build up. If it's something that can't be viewed up close like a house number on a transom wimdow, no sweat. If it can be viewed up close, you won't be happy with the results. Hopefully one of the glass guys will give you a little more help.

Amy, about 20-30 minutes worked for me on a fiberglass substrate after Bill Preston advised me to wait only enough time for the paint to tackup, but not dry.

Amy Wait until you have Knuckle Tack.. (Not dry but still soft enough that it will not Spider Web. Tap your knuckle to the surface and if you don't get any paint on it then it's time to pull the mask. Or also the wet finger approach.. Wet your finger and touch lightly. If paint pulls on your finger then it is not ready.

Amy since i have been doing this work in the last 2 weeks i can be very clear about it. I suggest that you put some hardener in the one-shot and then once you have painted the glass give it 10 minutes max. you want the paint to flow after you weed. the paint needs to flow out to a soft edge otherwise when you go to gild you will have problems with the gold not gilding all the way into the black. if you are going to gild over the black and have to clear off some gold off the clear glass after then use cotton wool and rapid tac. it seems to get the gold up without affecting the paint. I use back up black which seems a little tougher than one-shot. it is designed to be tougher anyway. any more questions? i hope to have a picture to post with a glue chipped, gilded with four colours of goldleaf, mother of pearl and blended paint background sign soon.
