I am two days from closing on my first house.
I couldn't go to work today because it took all day to arrange homeowner's insurance that was supposedly all arranged last week.
I spent all weekend fixing trivial stuff that the VA appraiser had a problem with, because the seller was in California, and it would have delayed closing (again!) to wait for him to do it.
The gas, electric, phone and cable companies all must die.
Why can't we just go back to the caves, people????/

Oh honey, I feel your pain. My husband gets transfered about every 18 months - last time it was 15. It's just a HIDEOUS experience and last time around we complicated things by actually buying a house.

As much as I'm not wild about where we are now (Palm Springs, CA), the thought of moving renders me close to catatonic. Next time around will probably require heavy medication.

Hiya Ben,
I know how you feel! You're making the single biggest investment most people will make in their lifetime. I bought my first home last August.
No, it ain't easy & the stress of jumping thru the hoops for the bank, seller, wife and anyone else puts in front of you can be overwhelming.
And to make matters worse, it's all downhill from there. [Smile]
I hope it all works out and in the long run, it will be worth it.
Havin' fun,
Checkers

Going back to the caves wouldn't solve the problem. You'd still have the EPA, PeTA, and the Sierra Club to contend with.

The EPA to make sure that your cave wasn't emitting too much Radon gas and require you to submit a environmental impact study.

PeTA will want to make sure you aren't stealing some rat or "trap-door" spider's home.

And, of course, the Sierra Club will want to make sure that none of the trees are disturbed and not disrupting some spotted owl's nest.

May I recommend a Canadian delicacy...a Paralyzer!

1 part Kalua
1 part Vodka
fill a bit with Coke
remaining 1-2" of glass with milk.

IN THAT ORDER
make sure that there is more milk than Coke or it'll curdle.

Happy Drinking!!
oh yeh, put the ice in first!

Well, closing was at 2pm today. At 11:00 the lawyers office called and said the paperwork wasn't done because the mortgage broker didn't do their part. At 11:05 the mortgage broker called and said the paperwork wasn't done because the lawyer hadn't done his part. The real estate agent is nowhere to be found. AAAARRRRGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!! Glen - I think I have a plan to keep all the environmental groups happy, and keep the age-old hunting tradition alive. Instead of deer, squirrel or turkey season, lets have lawyer, mortgage broker and realtor season. The hunters still get to shoot something, and no small furry animals have to die.

Hey Ben...congratulations on your new home!
when we moved into this house....the lady who lived here before hadn't yet completely moved out. I wanted to get the house recarpeted......so the carpet man was mad because he couldn't do his job when scheduled, the previous owner was mad because she was being hurried, the realtor was mad......they were all mad. We ended up unloading all our stuff in the driveway...and carport (looked like the Beverly Hillbilies)! I am sure the new neighbors wondered.

Or Yeah! I had that nice cozy settle feeling and built a house and moved in on August 1, 1998. It had just what we wanted. I traveled the first part of '99, then got transfered. Sold the house and moved here on August 3, 1999. Still trying to get the lawn and garden to look like something.

Finally closed yesterday. Signed my name roughly half a million times, and walked out with some papers, housekeys, and a lot of debt. Immediatly went to my new home, opened the door and found - you guessed it - the seller still hasn't finished moving out. He is a broadcast engineer who works for Motor Racing Network Radio, and he is doing the Richmond race this week. The other engineer quit, and a massive storm blew through here last night, and threw the racing schedule off. Guess I can cut the guy some slack and not throw his stuff in the street for a day or two. Also because of the storm - I almost had to file my first insurance claim. Gigantic limb came down, missed the garage by three feet!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA the joys of home owning...we bought our 1st house in sarasota june/july 85. it had an out building 20'x30', the lady that owned the house was having a house built, so she needed 30 days to get out. ok so we move into outbuilding. no hot water, no sink, had a shower inside and outside and was plumbed with a toilet. we lived in this for almost 60 days!!!!!!!! the house that was being built was behind schudle. so i let her stay all that time. in the time she was there and living in the house, she came back one day to tell me the sink drain plugged up......well i sorta looked at her and said "did i plug it up?" then you need to call a plumber and and pay to have it unplugged, you got all my money!!!!!! week or so later...same thing only she wants me to fix the A/C!!!!! told her i would like a new A/C unit on the house, at her EXPENSE!!!! the day she moved, they didnt even say thank you or goodby, hung the keys on the door to my outbuilding and split. the thing that really p.o. me was they took every damn light bulb in the house...regular and flourecent!!!!!!!

Hey Ben,
You're too nice! When you close on the house, anything remaining should be yours. What happened to the walk thru before closing? It sounds like your realtor didn't do their job and I would complain to their boss.
Be sure to change your locks and at least, move all the previous owners stuff into a garage or storage space and start charging him rent.
Imagine what would happen if he picks up his stuff and decides it was damaged while it was being stored at your house. Guess whose homeowners insurance is going up.
Congrats once again.
Havin' fun,
Checkers

Thanks to everyone for the encouragement and humor, it was truely needed. We are in the house, and are slowly beginning the job of unpacking. It feels good to look around and know, for the first time, that I am actually sitting in my own home. Thanks again, guys (and gals)!
