What is the best way to achieve a "ghost sign" hand-painted on brick? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Paint it right in the first place & wait 50 to 100 years,..... Just kidding, but if ya don't have that much time that would still be my first step then ya can age it with a water blaster or sand blaster in a coupla minutes or even stain it and antique it before distressing the actual paint.Seems to me some architect or design engineer would have already figured it's gonna cost more for the effect than it would to just paint the sign as it would have been done normally in the first place.I've seen a brick do the job of distressing wall paint in years past if one of the crew dropped thier scraper. The guy who taught me used to use a brick to hide drips and scrape old portions of repaints and if I recall it made the brick act as an eraser on the edges of the brick.Just don't forget to knock off all the excess dust if you intend to paint with any clear sealing coats to finish the job off right.

Regarding making it look old... I don't have any tricks or formulas, yet. Most all of the signs and lettering for movies/tv is "aged" to some extent, latex, and magic potions... The movie "The Pledge, Jack Nicholsen/Robin Wright Penn...., the old gas station... 50 years "old", they used latex, blow torch and other secrets, the reverse window lettering was unreal, 1 month old and looked 50 years. I'm kind of rambling, but am headed in this direction, if all goes according to plan.

Thanks to:Timi, PKing and John Lennig for their responses to my Ghost Sign inquiry! I just finished the job and the client was happy. I used "One-Shot" and flat Clear, 3 parts clear, 1 part paint, then more or less knocked it out! Thanks again, Martin
