When making a back-lit sign on plexiglass, do you use the black that is sold with the translucents...(I realize is really is opaque). Is there an advantage to using it over using the regular premium black vinyl?
I've always used the regular vinyl, but in the same time wondered about this.

In the realm of color that comes from light(as in a prism)or CYMK.BLACK is the absence of color. When dealing with pigments(such as paint)BLACK is all the colors combined! Dealing in Printed matter the Four(4)color process of ink is translucent,overlapping each other to produce more than four colors.ie The Cyan overlapping the Yellow will produce Green(which I am sure you already know) As far as BACK LIT signs are concerned for lettering purposes.That would be OPAQUE in both outlines for cartooning or seperations og POSTER STYLE pictorials. In order to answer your question correctly.One has to ask:What will you be using it for?

Thanks, Brian, I think that's a good substitute. Matte would be better than gloss.
Hi Pat...met you at Mazeppa. Pat, I just mean using black for anything...letters, graphics, whatever. For example, I just made a sign using sign-white plexi and placed letters on the outside in black with a Translucent Gold Nugget outline.
I'm not digitally printing anything...still only using the vinyl cutter.

I use regular 2 mil black if doing a backlit sign where the vinyl is on the back side and then the whole thing is backed up with white translucent. For backlits where I am using "sign white" plexi and applying to the face I use all translucents. That way the lack of gloss on the translucents is consistent. Never thought about using Matte black instead. I guess I should check out the price difference! (But I doubt it is that much in the overall cost of a sign)

I use hp on white translucent back lit signs, it works in most cases as well as translucent and lasts a lot longer, of course that is yellows and reds and blacks, not sure about darker colors but the white moulded plastic or flat panels give enough light to work pretty well. Bill
