I uploaded my site (unfinished) to Bravenet. I put some pics of a van job I did at the portfolio page here and now the pics don't showup anymore. It tells me I exceeded the 20 meg limit.

What are some good resonable hosts out there. I registered my name with network Solutions but they are pretty high on the hosting.

Got Hosts?

Thanks!
Tony B

Host thyself [Smile]

with a cable modem or dsl connection its fairly easy. Lots of freeware/shareware or cheap server softwares out there, and you can do it with windows software on any operating system, ('course if you really want to educate yourself you could be a purist and learn linux and run apache) I've got a server sitting in the shop (used to be in my living room) which hosts mine and 3 other web sites, email server (2 domains) and an ftp server. Servers don't require much computing power, running on a P 166 128 meg ram. I know people hosting with 486's. Nice weekend project to set up in an old computer. Good learning curve as well, you'll end up with a better working knowledge of what makes the internet tick.

Tony,

I've also been lookin' at Bravenet for a possible host. Their free service allows 100mb for storage. I thought 20 seemed lower than what I read so I just checked the website & noticed that there's a 20mb/day bandwidth limit. I think that means you'll have to wait until tomorrow to continue uploading. Good luck.

i use DotEasy.com, and they're free. i get a 10 meg limit. after that they want you to pay for extra storage.

i don't know how involved your website is... but one solution (besides paying for the storage) is to reduce you image file sizes.

have you optimized all the photos? i never load any images larger than 50K, so that would be 400 pictures... that's a lot of pictures.

(50K makes the site load faster for potential customers with slow modems).

the only times i get close to my limit is if i have to FTP a large file to a service bureau.

Any free server you use, you will run into bandwidth restrictions.

I pay $20 a month for my site with a 5GB/month limit and it consistently runs about 2GB right now.. if it goes over 5 GB they dont shut it down, they just charge me more that month. [Smile] .. that's a good chunk of bandwidth for the average website though.

We use OLM Hosting for the Rapid Tac Inc. site, and have had nothing but great results

• 700 MB disk space
• 12 GB Transfer/Month
• 75 POP email accounts
• Squirrel - Web Based email
• Web based control panel
$29.95 a month.

My personal site is a much cheaper plan since I don't get near the traffic of our business site.

• 75MB disk space
• 2 GB Transfer/Month
• 5 POP email accounts
• Web based control panel view demo
• Discounted Domain Name Registration
$8.95 a month.

I tried the free sites with my personal site (MotoView.com) but I really didn't like the pop ups, and banners they introduced into my site.

Also, mike summed it up about bandwith. If you go with a free host they sometimes lock out your viewers if you exceed your bandwith. With a real pay host your chances of being turned off and locking out potential viewers is very small.
Another thing to consider is the cost of hosting from home could very well exceed a solid host's fees. Basic DSL is fast, but it usually won't handle the bandwith requirements of multiple viewers. I can get DSL service that will handle huge bandwith ( up to 7mbps, but it starts at a few hundred dollars ber month, and can reach up to a grand a month for such a high speed/high bandwith sonnection. Hosting from home also opens your home computer up to being hacked. Not likely to happen, but possible. I'm happy to pay someone else to host my site just for the security alone.

Just some thoughts... :-)
