I have a client who wants gold leaf lettering on the stern of his sailboat and 2 inch stripes down each side ( about 16’) I’m thinking of just using the vinyl gold leaf not the package type that you brush on. Is it possible to buy gold leaf vinyl in 2” strips?...........and has anyone one ever done anything like this?

Any thoughts on this job?

Thanks

I don't know about the availability of Signgold in 2 inch strips, but real leaf is ( or was ) available in ribbon form up to 3 inch width. It comes in 67 foot rolls loosely applied to a paper backing the same as book leaf. 23K. Patent works best, since it more or less sticks to the paper as you apply it.

There used to be several companies that put this out, among them Hastings, Swift, and the one I liked best Gusto Manetti. (Not sure of the spelling on that first name in Manetti) This is used mostly for the narrow stripes on fire vehicles, but should work well on boats.

This is not a cheap material, and the price varies according to what the price of gold is doing on world financial markets on a day to day basis.

There is also something called Dutch gold. This is a form of imitation gold and will tarnish in outdoor use. I think it is only put up in book form.

You shouldn't have to clear the real stuff, unless the stripes are subject to rubbing at dockside, and even then, the clear is only going to stall off damage.

If this boat is wooden hulled, then chances are it will be refinished every year or two. Something else to consider.

Hope this helps.

Is this a boat in a marina or a yacht club?

Yacht club boats I think should be handled in traditional manner and gilded with leaf and clear coated.

Vessels that get banged around can get anything. I've seen SignGold stripes, but not that wide. Anything can be ordered. The SignGold does not look like gold to many of us, even though it is a gold electrostatically applied to adhesive.

On a sunny day without wind, you can dust the boat with talc and letter and stripe it with size, in sections. Alternate gilding and sizing to keep the timing right, and you'll have one of the nicest days of your life!

Is the boat in the water or in a cradle?
