I’m getting a white vertical line exactly in the center of everything I scan. The line blends back into the image on both sides. Sort of looks like what you get when a bright light is reflecting off an object being photographed. The scanner is a Umax 2400S.

Has anyone else had a problem like this? Could it be the bulb? I watched the bulb while scanning and can't see any spots on it. I’ve tried every filter, scanned B/W, gray scale, 256 color and true color. Makes no difference. I checked out Umax’s Web site. No help there.

Have you tried shifting the artwork you are scanning from side to side to see if the line stays in the same spot? If you move the artwork and the line moves with it, it's something with the artwork - maybe it's glossy?

If you move the artwork but the line stays in one spot ,there's something stuck on the scanhead.. maybe a spec of dust. I dont know if you can open it up or pop out the glass on your scanner to clean the head but that's my guess.

Maybe you have a light scratch on the glass?

The mark is in the same spot all the time. That was my next try, taking it apart to investigate and clean. If I figure it out, I'll post it in case someone else runs up against the same thing.
Thanks!

Try looking at the mirrors that lead to the lens for the CCD. VERY carefully (using canned air) blow off the dust and stuff on the mirrors. If it is a stationary line that runs vertical through the scan it is more than likely on the mirror assy.
