During my rather short Military career, there was something that we always did at the end of an exercise or training day. We used to sit in an open forum and discuss "lessons learned ". This would give everyone from Platoon sergeants down to privates the opportunity to share in things that went well and not so well in that day or particular exercise.
I thought it'd be cool to do the same here. Instead of asking just a particular question, there should be a thread for things that we have learned that day.
What do you guys think?

I have always had trouble tracing in Corel trace. I'd do the trace and import to corel to clean up. I never could clean up well because when I'd select something to delete (from background) it'd select something from the image as well.
TODAY I LEARNED that if I trace, import and UNGROUP ALL, I an delete the parts I need to...Months of redrawing and scanning has been replaced today.
Boy am I happy about that.

A customer asked me to paint the window frames of his building. I said I didn't want to do this as I'm not a painter...He sweet talked me. I am an idiot, I didn't stick to my guns as I should have. The lesson...Go with your gut feeling first.

I had someone ask if I would do up a license plate for his aunt.(Limo Service)
Asking what design she like, He handed myself a home made business card.
I started the small project and emailed it to her.
Now with a new look for cards plus vehicle lettering and much more! She lives around 500 Kms. away so thats the only way for her to see this.(Low-Res Jpeg format)
She responded by saying she loved it. OK! Now to get the license plate to her. I know that he goes there every weekend to visit the family. I took it over to him last night and ask to deliver it. His response was no that's not what she wants and she will not like it. I should have done this and that to it. My statement to him was we had already talked and it was to her approval. Silence in the Air.
My lesson was never trust the middle man on information. Go directly to the customer or buyer to find out what's what!
Happens to many times to me in the past.

HAts off to all of you owners out there- This site is very professional but still a lot of cameraderie - as evidenced in this thread...
my two cents CDN or .9 cents US is
WRITE IT ALL DOWN -if the customer said hi- write it down... -if you called him and n/a- write it down... If he asked for a coke no ice, write it down...
personal notes have saved my heinie several times.

I need to learn your lesson to say "no". I say "yes" all the time, and find myself going to bed at midnight all the time. I went to bed last night (this morning) at 1 am because I took on too much and now can't get everything done that I promised which brings me to another bit of advice....
When a customer asks (me) how long to get a project done....always add 3 times what my initial estimate would be and that would be accurate.
It's kind of a running joke around my house. I tell my wife I have this "little" job to do and it should only take an hour......and she says, "Ok, i'll see you around in about 4 hours then".

I am not a pinstriper. (but I got some brushes!!!)
I already knew that, but the guy wanted his '35 Ford 4 door Sedan striped... it's restored, some finish flaws, slight, just factory lines, please.
Well, I wiped off about 66% of lines , finally got it done, (a bit thicker lines than I wanted) He's happy, may lead to more of this work, but, man, I've got to get better at it, I don't mind slow, but consistent line and flow counts.
