Sign related? Nope. Just a diversion. I like Abraham Lincoln, in fact he's in our family tree. Got a chance to visit the Ford Theatre in D.C. a few weeks ago and see where he was sitting when Booth shot him.
But the Penny? I hate them....and think they should go. You never have them when you really need them, and when you don't, you have a pocket full of them. They're virtually worthless and a major nuisance.
I'm in favor of rounding up the .99 to the full dollar. Hardly felt and good for businesses. what can you buy for a penny these days???
Let's put old Abe on a $5 coin. We can use that in a car wash instead of putting in 25 quarters....which leads me to this Andy Rooney style question...
Have you ever noticed that coin operated car washes cost more to operate, yet give you less wash time per quarter?

....and also, is it just me, or has anyone else had the urge to twist the metal spray tip of a coin operated powerwash wand into a pretzel when it shuts off just before you get all the soap off your car? And you don't have any more $1 bills or quarters? Hehehe

Pennies are a total nuissance here in Canada too. At least we have "Loonies" and "Toonies", which are one and two dollar coins. Back in the old country (Switzerland, and they know about money, believe me)) they chucked that nonsense about thirty(!) years ago. There are 5, 10, 20, 50 Rappen (cents) and 1, 2 and 5 Franken (Dollar) coins. As far as I know the Euro has the same structure. So hey, why not catch up with the rest of the world ?

No kidding. The collection bucket for Ronald McDonald House for kids that hangs below the drive-in window at Mickie-Dees gets most of my pennies now. I'd rather write them a check once a year and forget the non-cents<<< I know...lame joke.

While pennies ARE a pain in the butt (no arguement there) they are a neccessary evil.
Think of it this way.. pennies are the lowest denomination we have, hence we have a ton of them.. If we do away with pennies, that makes nickels the lowest denomination hence we will be over-run with them as well, and nickels are heavier.
Not to mention the issues with sales taxes and pricing we'd have to deal with.
Can you imagine having to adjust your prices so when you add sales tax to your projects you end up with a price with either a 5 or 0 in the cents field? And you would have to do this every time your local government tacks on another 1/4 penny to the sales tax rate, which happens every couple months where I am.

They'd probably cost more to ship than they are worth
Normally, I use my own personal, pint sized penny roller to take care of the excess baggage. In the last 3 years she has rolled over $1000 dollars in pocket change which was put towards the college fund! The whole process takes care of the "I'm Bored"'s as an added bonus.
Now, if only I can find a way to make returnable bottles go away without having to feed the machines at the grocery store

Hey Canadians, are you ... or did you ... do something like the US is doing with our quarters? (making multiple versions) It's kinda neat when we get to see new ones when they come out (some good ... some ????) ... anywho ... last week I was walking around with a quarter that on the back has a picture of kids that looked like it was drawn by a three year old (artistically challenged 3 year old)... Canadian
Every time I pulled out my pocket full of faces at a store the cashier would notice it and ask what state it was from ... then ask whats the point of that ... like I know because it was in my pocket Is there a point?
On a side note ... I love the two tone coin thing ... wish we had that here ... those are cool
Back on topic (like I was ever there to begin with) ... Now I'm going to have to weigh some pennies on the postal scale tomorrow ... I think Glenn may be on to something

When I was a kid, I used to collect coins from different countries. My favorite was a $1 coin from Hong Kong. I don't know why. I just struck my fancy for some reason.

Todd, All of our grocery stores have a "Coinstar" machine. You dump 'em in and it kicks out a receipt. Take it to the counter and collect your cash. No one counts change in Virginia anymore.

We have had multiple image quarters for 4-5 years now. All started with each province on a quarter set.
The country side gobbled them up as collector pieces, but arn't worth more then their face value, really.
The two tone coin you are talking about is our grand 2 dollar coin called a Toonie! Brass 1 dollar coin is called a Loonie!
The goverment was thinking of bring out a 5 dollar coin but with all that weight in your pocket from nickels, dimes, quarters, loonies and toonie and if the 5 dollar coin as well your pant would fall down!
LOL

We would have to have a strong box strapped to our backs to go to the grocery store.-I think they should ask the BB people to design a new American 5 dollar bill. What do you think?

I dunno, I don't really mind change. About 2 weeks ago my family and I moved. I counted up all my change from my change jar (big 10 gallon thing) and wound up with $572.85. I put on my best suit, loaded all the rolled change into a bankers case (You know, those breifcase things with the hand cuff attached.) and had two of my friends wear ear buds and "escort" me to the bank to make a deposit.
It was pretty funny.....I guess you had to be there.

Todd: Yeah, that really happened. I got the case from my Mom back in high school (she was a securities broker at the time). I used to carry my clarinet in it, Ellwood Blues style .
