My friend won the gold in the summer Olympics in 1998 in New Orleans in Karate and has opened a studio finally last spring here locally. Being very proud of her, I have been encouraging her for three years to open her own dogo. She finally did here and was still under her instructor's name. But, finally, she has gone on her own and needs some ideas for a name. She is a black belt looking for a Japanese name, or something easy to remember even if it is in English. There is a studio also called Dogo, so we can't simply name it that. Any ideas, folks??? She knows who Letterville is and even used to help me with signs when she was in between jobs and I needed help. (Boy, could she flip those boards!)

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Good ideas, letterheads! I am looking forward to speaking to her tomorrow. She is going to be flattered that you responded. I will keep you posted. That dojo is one word I could easily mispell. But don't tell her, I never argue with her; I do know better!

Hey Deb, If your friend mastered the moves of Karate, she must have gotten some of it's disciples and spiritualism. She should be able to come up with something meaningful or commercial. N-YER-CHK-BUK would be nice.

This German-American Black Belt Babe says to give you guys a big THANKS for the names! I sent her to the website and it was down today so she may be on tomorrow or the next to thank you herself. She is in love with the name Performance Gold, but is still contemplating on the name. I suggested that to call herself Performance Gold would probably flatter any of us because we deal with high "performance" gold at times and she could always remember the letterheads by that! As far as the image inquiry, Gisa is a respected citizen and leader of the community with four children and husband. I believe she wants to keep a respectable image. (She is a renegade to me because she beat all the odds and went to compete in New Orleans even after a van accident where she injured her leg a few weeks before.) And she faced a lot of jealousy and not-so-fair treatment by others in the field working along side of her. She has only been in karate for about 4 years to this date! Well, I better get off here but, don't forget Gisa when you need some signboards split or flipped! Thanks again.

Gisa wrote back and told me that she was under a lot of time pressure to change her name during the holidays. This incident of her independence happened unexpectedly around the holidays, even though it was inevitable. She saw the most recent post by Empy too and wants to once more thank all who spent time responding.
The name Performance Gold was already taken (even though she could have added Karate, she wanted something unique and individual.) It was a tough decision and she came up with a long one, but descriptive of her technique. It is "Ascending Sun Okinawan Karate" and has checked with the Secretary of State and it had not been copyrighted. Also she got approval with the regional director and she is on her way! For a logo, she wants a crane flying in front of a sun. The layout and design will have to come after the first of Jan. since I am swamped, and she may have to go with a sign above the store because it is too cold for window lettering. Any ideas are welcome, and thanks for the super response!!!

hmmm hehehehehe Keep it simple and name it "Whack". Thats the sound heard when someone is hit pretty hard. "House of Whoop-ass" then students can win the "Whoop Ass Medals" bronze silver and gold! You must be proud of your friend! see! Girls DO kick ass!

I think the fact that she won the gold medal is a great selling point to her business but I think it's limiting your ideas to that line of thinking. you could use gold I guess, maybe golden dragon karate studio, or golden lotus dogo, I like the fact that nature plays a big part in most Japanese names and i think that may be the way to go. its too bad she didn't want to open a bakery I have a good one for that , its a play on words... " RISING BUN BAKERY" like rising sun. hehe

Mike, Thanks to all of you (as usual helping out) You have an excellent point there. We really do need to direct the customers don't we. Case in point. I will try to reach her, see if she will open up a little more. Pressure from the opposition can be deadly. I wish she could step back and absorb the ingenuity of the Letterheads. I am still trying! Deb

I'm back to let you know that Gisa is settling on Ascending Sun Okinawan Karate since she is starting anew and feels some spiritual rebirth in the name. She asked me to explain that she did not want any notariety of the tournaments to be included in the name (I told you she was modest). I knew she was being pressured to change in a hurry and there are many legalities if any other name is copied so it was a matter of time to check each and every one out. I asked her to get a photo of the shop and she prefers to wait until we get the sign on with the new name. I may take one of what there is left from the last job in July also. Now I need to draw a crane in front of a sun and get it to coordinate with the old lettering. Add the name and she has a fresh look and an individuality she has never had until now! many bows again, from Gisa signed Deb ps. Bobby, your artwork really kicks! It's tight!
