I would like to see if there is any interest from the group in having some competetive fun while attending our meet in June?
I am sculpting a statue of my rendition of what a letterhead looks like..it is caricature and going to emulate the great Fred Self!
I was going to make these awards available for prizes for first in the following categories but I would like some feedabck first if it sounds like a fun idea...and secondly how we might do it. I do not want it solely based on speed or technique but overall...in a specific time frame...then it will be judged by the group as a whole.
Areas I have thought of?
Design Pin Striping Best Panel Craziest Project Best Logo Panel Most Inspiring Letterhead
etc........ what do y'all think?...Would love to get some feedback on this!
An example of what I mean is this...My woodcarving groups would always hold a whittlin contest...those who participated only could use one carving instrument(usually a knife)..and were given one hour to create something out of a blank of wood that was given....It was so much fun(I won a lot)...and this is something that I hope to bring the public in on next year...so that is why I present it now...a playful way of gettin people involved.!

Robert, I've often thought about something similar, but I kept having a problem with a foolproof judging system....if the object is to get folks to participate...then those that do, will get their names in a hat and when the contest is over, one name will be drawn as the "winner". In a way, everyone who plays, wins, but one lucy player gets a prize. Doe's this make sense? Just an idea... While we are on ideas, I thought it might be cool if attendees, who chose to, could donate a panel or project to a charity raffle and we could sell tickets (5 for $1)and near the end of the meet draw tickets and each winner would get their pick of the panels. The money could be used to purchase art books for a local school library or other charitable groups..and some folks will go home with a panel to remember the meet. This is probably too confusing.....I'll stop now. Joe, Makin Chips and Havin Fun!

Hey Robert...After hearing your plans for a meet then seeing your facility, there's no doubt you could have a good meet (you certainly have the room).
Now... I hope you'll forgive my candor here.
Light hearted spontaneous competition between friends has been a staple of the Letterhead movement since day one, but I really think putting people under the competitve gun from the get go will be somewhat less enticeing than you might think.
Sharing someones time and teaching as well as learning in a one to one atmosphere is the most important thing to me...being under the gun to produce something that someone is going to judge would be an absolute turn off.
I agree with what Joe said as far as anyone doing a project then putting it into a drawing or an auction is much less intimidating and I would think it would gather far more interest than a contest to see who's the best.
Now, this is only my opinion but...I really think people go to meets to learn from all that participate not, to watch people compete.
A lot of your ideas are worthy...this one?..well lets's see what others think.

a better way of explaning what I had in mind was to take each category and although it might be in a specific area such as pinstriping...
take for instance...
Anyone could participate...but the rules of this contest might be the following:
each person to use a pinstripe brush only and create or paint a donkey....something totally unrelated to what the brush can do. This gives everyone a chance to have fun...stretch the limit on the fun of the contest and it would be something that everyone could sit and watch as it unfolds!
but...I want this event and the Jam next year to be nothing but fun....the whitlin contest was always something to look forward to...a highlight if you will to not only those who participated but the public that watched it all unfold!
anyone else have a spin on this?

Robert, I really admire the effort you're applying to make this a great meet and to see that everyone has fun. One of the best parts of the history of Letterhead meets is that there has been an environment where absence of competition has been sought. There is more participation and sharing without highlighting a personality. The competitive aspects of our charactor arise anyway, but by attempting to subdue them encourages those feeling more timid to come out and play.

The best looking panels I have seen at Letterhead meets. Were produced for NO money and NO pressure! allowing the creative juices to flow. You might stiffle the friendship atmosphere with some sort of competion. Already this seems way to "structured" for a Letterhead Meet. Why not just invite talented people to get together for three days of FUN! If people want to paint panels, supply paint, panels and drawing boards. Air brushing, the same Carving, sculpturing, eating, horse shoes, etc.room in which to play. Leave the rest of it up to the indivduals whom want to...do. If someone wants to "learn" something, all they have to do is ask. How much harder can this be?
