Lets face it, laminated aluminum requires more that a hole for attachment if you are going to top hang it and let it fly.
Below are photos of my hopes for a successful flight:
The bracket were cut from steel and welded into a form that fit my sign shape. It is a steel ring welded to 2 pieces of steel flats that were bent by a blacksmith. They did not fit my pattern, but close enough. The create a sandwich grab on the Dibond from both sides, by bolting through in 3 places each.
Next the bracket were painted well and then bolted to the Dibond face, then painted again to eliminate rusting. Stainless might be a better application if you have the money and resources.
Next the frame molding, formed from HDU was carved out in the back, to accomodate the bracket bulk. and fit to the sign
Next the molding was form routed in the area where the ring will protrude, because its my last chance to get a router down on this area. The rest I will do after all mold is in place for continuity. In this case I have a joint present so I have used sandblast resist to secure the pieces together temporarily for routing (worked well).
Next I silicone attached all molding to one side of the sign and clamped for drying. Drying will take longer than you think with silicone for good bonding. Notice that routing will be done on the rest of the sign after assembly
Finally the frame was routed, painted and assembled.
The idea of this type of bracketing, is to grab as much surface area as you practically can to elimate bending or tearing of the aluminum product. I could have build nice looking outside grabs for this application, but would have needed to spend to much time in a sign which I will have 88 hours. This would be the case in need, for a sign without an outside edge molding.I hope that this has helped with some ideas for hanging Dibond, Alumalite, and other soft substrates, Bronzeo
