Hi Letterpeople. I have to make an 8' x 6' sign & I was wondering, if you had the choice, would you make it out of plywood or sticking 12" pine boards together?

If you picked pine, what method would you use?

Sorry about the kindergarten questions but I've never made one before! Thanks always, Felix.

What kinda sign are you making? Will it be carved?....Plywood...Nope. Do you just want a substraight for a painted and/or stickered sign?
One justs needs to ask.

It'll be a flat 6' x 8', 2 sider (2 signs), mouted on a 6" x 6" post. It'll be painted & vinyl.

Felix,
use the plywood and save the labor time on laminating the pine.

If the Plywood is too rough, you might use the pine, but it wont last as long.

Make sure to prime all sides well, this will help keep the wood from warping, and protect the either wood from moisture damage.

I usually avoid using pine outside, unless it's for a limited amount of framing.

If pine is all you have and your short of money, use it, then set some money aside from this job to stock up on some better materials.

Good Luck

Thanks guys. You know, I asked a do it yourself friend of mine & he said he coated his 4'x5' plywood sign with west systems epoxy (probably would have been cheaper to use PVC, IMO).

Thanks always!

If this sign is going outside it won't last six months. You can't compare these two substates at all.The grain in pine is way to wide and will split in no time.Plywood is a much better bet if it's prepped properly and in the long run a lot cheaper. [Roll Eyes]
