I'm starting to prepare for Cody's 3rd birthday party, and as the theme (and current love of his life) is trains, I'd like to style the invitations after train tickets.
I have NO idea what a train ticket looks like, or looked like in the days of steam engines. I've attempted internet searches with no luck.
My next stop will be the library if need be. But I'd be more interested if someone could give me a vague idea of how one is laid out. I'm sure that would be more than adequate for a group of 3 yr olds. I'll pretty it up some anyway, so complete authenticy isn't vital.
I'll be adding a Thomas the Tank theme to it. For those of you that don't know who that is (I just learned at Christmas myself), it's an old time show on tv where all these trains talk to each other, each having faces and personalities. Most of the trains are steam engine types. Ringo Star and Alec Baldwin are the voice overs on the videos available.
Here are some images of two tickets from the late steam era - back and front. They were printed on heavy card and the measured 2¼" by a little less than 1¼". Colours varied but were always drabs. This is my first serious attempt to post a picture, if it doesn't work I'll e-mail an attachment. Have no idea what Canadian tickets looked like, but as Thomas is British based hope it will do.

there's another type of train ticket that are (mostly) issued by the conductor on the train, rather than the printed ones issued at the station. this type lists all the stops along the route and the conductor punched (with a hole punch) or initialed the starting and ending points.
A man leaving Walldog to see his favorite minor league baseball team, the Mahl Sticks, might have a ticket that looks sort of like this:
