Hey, it's me again! Ya' know, it s been 4 years since I made a sandblasted sign and then, it was in Southern California. Now I live in Alberta, Canada where it got above 0c/ 32f yesterday....SPRING HAS SPRUNG!
I am now asking opinions on finishes. I plan to use a clear oil based stain on the sandblasted part, one shot for the raised letters and outer border. Is that all?? Is that all I need? I know some people swear by varnish or such...is it necessary or reccomeded??
I quit trying to use "varnish", specifically spar urethanes, years ago. I don't know of any clearcoat, if that's what you mean, that will hold up except Pelucid(which I haven't tried yet. A lot of folks here on the board swear by it so it must be good.
I don't know much about Canadian climate, except that it's cold in winter, but here in Florida the elements are exceptionally cruel to sign finishes. Oil based enamels don't seem to hold up well(for me) on sandblasted signs here. I have switched to using acrylic waterbased paints and stains. My signs are looking better and lasting longer.
You might try Pelucid.

I have been told water-based is recommended as well. Do they make a clear stain that is water based? I probably will be using a water based wood primer before my paint...NOT THE STAIN OF COURSE.
Are there water based stains that have a gloss about them??

Corey all the people I know use all latex paints including exterior urathanes. Two coats ex-primer(latex)of coarse.Lets the wood breath and keeps the wood from holding water.Hope it helps

Corey, They make semi-transparent stains in waterbased. The solid color stains that i use have somewhat of a sheen to them if sprayed on a smooth surface but they are not glossy.
I have used waterbased clear (Ronan UV clear) on one sign but I haven't checked on it in a while. I need to do that. Check with Pierre on the Pelucid product. I believe you can topcoat latex paints with that for a glossy finish. As I said though, I've never tried it.

Anyone heard of a glue called "WeldBond"? For gluing my cedar together, I chose this last night at my local HomeDepot.
Still wondering what the perfect combo of stains and paints to use.
Would it be wrong to use the acrylic latex for the raised letters and an oil based stain for the blasted portion (about 85% of the sign)? And there is no urathane or coat you would recommend to put over it all???
What about like a Thomson's Water Sealer prior to painting??????????????????

Corey, Unless they've made improvements in the past few years, I don't know of any polyurethanes that won't deteriorate from UV exposure. They yellow, spot, and peel. I would not use polyurethanes.
The Weldbond, isn't that a urethane glue similar to Gorilla Glue? I know it's waterproof but I've never used that on a wood sign. I use Gorilla Glue urethane on HDU all the time for glueing on backer boards and such. I would highly recommend WestSystems epoxy for any wood signs.
Thompson's water seal is some really nasty stuff and the wood will eventually darken and then eventually turn grey under it anyway.
I would check into using waterbased or oilbased stains and Pelucid as a top coat.

I have recently tried, but cannot endorse, the following.....I thinned 1Shot to make a stain..than cleared it with 1Shot UV clear. I've been told that the clear is flexable...but time will tell....I'll let you know after we have a real winter ...hehe! Joe, Makin Chips and Havin Fun!
