I've always been a fan of using stainless steel screws and bolts on my sings to keep rust stains from running down the face. Many times I'll plan the screws to be in a border so I can lay a small circle of vinyl over the screw to hide it completely.
On this particular project though, I'm installing a 16 foot by 40 foot billboard that is all paint. This job would require $90 worth of screws in stainless steel.
SO
I was wondering what you all use on billboards. Do deck screws rust? Will paint stick to the heads of deck screws?
BTW, the billboard is mainly viewed on a 35 mph highway, but a road next to the billboard is only about 40 feet away.

Hi Dave....I use a heavy sheet rock screw. They have some fancy screws out now...so I would check at your lumber yard. Different type drive head configurations also. I just paint the screw head and let it go....and at 55 mph you will never see them. They are REAl easy to insert and remove...no pre-drilling needed. I use them EVERYWHERE...they are the most versitile thing around my shop. Check em out.

Jackson has the right answer, except that I use Porch & Deck screws! They are coated so as not to rust! A dab of paint on them, after you have everything assembled and they are almost invisible!

Yup porch and deck screws, use 'em all over the place. We sometimes get them with torx (sp? the star shaped slots) heads if they'er going to be reachable by the public.

Galvanized deck screws can corrode under some conditions, especially here on the coast.
I coat out some enamel receptive vinyl with the background color, and then cut 3/4" circles to place over the screw heads. This completely seals and hides the fasteners.

the gold colored deck screws all the way! and run them in with the old cordless drill gun and then a dab of paint or a vinyl dot to cover....and even without the touch-up you will be hard pressed to see them that far away
