I've got a GCC 30" plotter that has an intermittant problem that's driving me mental.
I'd call my support guy but, he's over in the US finding more "stuff" that he can sell here at well inflated prices.
I digress...
The plotter feeds well, runs forwards to backwards well, side ways well but when I come to cut it cuts the most jagged lines you've ever seen.
Is it a software problem? another problem or just the fact that I was the idiot that picked this machine.
Any ideas?

I have experienced the very same problem with the plotter/software set up we have. I believe it it is a software thing.
I would look at the file closely to make sure that the file itself has not become corrupted in any fashion.
I have noticed that 90% of the times that I have experienced this, it was when I was cutting from a file that was strictly type. I often convert type to curves to cut because of the order that it cuts in. Curves cut inside first and then the outside while type will cut the opposite.
When I am experiencing a particularly extreme episode of this type of cutter problems, I shut the plotter off and reboot the computer. This seems to remedy the malady for the time being. Whether or not it actually "fixes" anything is another point but it does seem to correct the problem for the time being.

Try going into plotter setup port settings and see what type of handshake is set. HTML, hardware, x on x off etc. Write down what the current setting is and then try changing the setting. If nothing improves then you can always go back to the original setting. Sometimes this being set wrong can cause a problem very similar to what you describe.

Our Gerber 15" had been working great...then started with the torn/jagged cuts. The manual troubleshooting had us clean a optical sensor. This didn't solve the problem...but taking the cover off the tool head showed us that the knife was not swiveling in direct movement of the connecting bar linkage. We discovered we could move this bar while holding the knife holder stationary. Taaa Daaaa....there was a loose set screw...tightened it and...voila! back in business. Hope this helps.
