Just started on my first foam sign. Up until now it has always been Mahogany when it came to carving. I have messed around with scraps of foam and dug in a little at mass mayhem last year. But this is the first time I have had to shape and build with this stuff. I LOVE IT! I can't wait to dig in with the chisels. If it comes out half way decent maybe I will post some pics.

Rob, When you carve letters, or anything, you'll find it dulls the chisle a lot faster! I carve 1 letter, then quickly dress it on a buffing wheel for each letter, then it really slips along faster. Also save all your scraps because they really do glue up nice for all sorts of 3-D carvings. I find using a small $20 wood sander/grinder to rough things into shape real fast. Enjoy John Arnott

Sure beats having scraps of vinyl around! I have only played around with wood and linoleum block with carving tools (which was ions ago). Just wondered how the tools glide through the foam? Could you explain what some of the differences are?

Deb- I have only carved Mahogany which is quite a bit harder than the foam. Your tools just sing right through the foam. Make sure you always have sharp tools. The foam cuts and routes beautifully. I'll have a hard time going back to Mahogany.

Hey Rob, I just got a shipment from Sign Art Products for Mass Mayhem a bunch of 12" x 24" panels the are marked "SignFoam III" I didn'tget any info on it but somebody said it was denser, I guess we will find out soon, bring your chisels. Also, Joe C. is suppose to be doing a sharpening demo, the do's and don'ts of sharpeneing

I saw Jaspers "Design Board" in Orlando.....tight cells...I'm Guessing but I think it's 22lb...Sign Foam III? I think the foam wars are starting! Good for us! I will be testing it...let you know. Joe, Makin Chips and Havin Fun!

Its too bad Maine is so far away from me. I just inherited 30-40 BUCK chisels from my grandfather and don't know anything about sharpening them. Right now they are razor sharp but that probably won't last long. I told my usband that I wanted him to go out back and cut me down a basswood tree so that I can carve something soft.
