Hi All from snowy Eastern Ontario! Thought some of you could appreciate this little story. Last week I called a sign supplier for a vinyl banner 3'x8'. I asked the fellow if I could hand-letter on this banner. He said, "Pardon, I don't understand, what's hand-lettering?" I said, "like using 1-shot lettering enamel to paint the lettering on." He said, "I'll have to check." Duh, they even sell 1-shot there, although I do not buy it from them. At least English was his first language (as opposed to French). Anyway, I enamel-coated the banner just in case. Thought you guys might get a laugh out of that one. I sure felt like a dinosaur and I'm only 34!!!

Hey Heather, good story........... laugh or cry? ..........ALWAYS best to laugh.
There will always be that certain percentage of the population that make me feel like my workin life producing signs has been a waste of time. e.g. Q."Do you do signs on windows?"!! A. "No, You will have to take the glass out and replace it with Plywood"
Keep on Laughin RobC

Oh this feels so good, and I thought I was the only one.... My supplier told me recently I am one of the few left in the province who still does handlettering, so I finally got into the vinyl business to keep up with the world. But I hate fighting with this computer here...

problem these days is that the seller doesn't know much about the product they sell. Sooooo... you can get some pretty weird answers from their part. A pearl is when you find a sell person that is aware about what they sell and inform you about product compatibility and such. Worst thing is when a supplier abandon one item, mostly in hand lettering, and that you have to find a substitute for it. I hate when that happends.

No offence to the French people out there...what I really meant was to make a point about how much this supplier screws up on me. First, they have my company name backwards, half of the time they don't send the products to my shipping address, but to my shop on a day I am away lettering trucks, then sometimes they send me an invoice in French, which I can roughly figure out. I always make sure to order from them early so I have room for screw-up time. It is frustrating to have a supplier who does not know their product. Sign supplies are not cheap and they should educate themselves on their product and be more customer oriented. Fortunately, I really find most of this humorous. Makes my week a lot more interesting. It was not humorous when I was just starting in business many years ago and I depended on the supplier knowing the products they sold. I might mention that this supplier is a chain. Anyway, most of the time I order from Canadian Signcrafters as their knowledge and service are A-1! Please don't take my little post as complaining, just kind of pointing out the little things that make me shake my head sometimes. Heather

Sounds like you might want to look for a different supplier!
If I may suggest, ND GRAPHICS in Ottawa would be an excellent choice. We have some relatively new staff there but they are very commited to providing our customers with fast, accurate responses and unequalled customer service.
If you call 1 888 NDGRAPH you also have the option of connecting with our National Customer Service team...the best in the business.
Hope you will give us a try!

I hand painted a 4x6 for my Softball Team just last week or so. I brought it into the shop here (The Printing Press) and showed the boss and the Pressman. "See guys, THIS is what I do at home."
The boss here sells cheapie banners with vinyl and when he saw my banner he asked "how much?" I told him and he gasped... I explained the whole thing was hand painted with detailing (shadows and stuff) and that's gonna cost him. He said, "yeah, but this is that sticker stuff" pointing to my team's name, and I replied, "Nope, painted." He then took a closer look.
"You painted THAT!?"
Love those questions... "are you an artist?" "do you do that by hand?" "I thought ya all had a stencil" yada yada yada
