I got an odd request today. The customer has a drag bike that he wants me to stick a real 100 dollar bill on the tail section and bury it in clear auto ureathane. The clearing aint a problem. But I'm not sure what to use to stick the bill down first, anybody got any suggestions?
I'm gonna try using just a dollar, for experiments first, haha dont wanna mess this one up. I was thinking of using spray can adhesive, cant remember the name, but its not 3m trim adhesive, this stuff is pretty thin. I was also gonna try maybe intercoat clear on the bill and stick it while its tacky. I just dont know what I'll do if i get bubbles in them.

I would think thats too thick. I have this stuff thats thinner, gives just a light tack. Bought it at an art store a while ago. I just dont know how the adhesives will react to ureathane clear. Was thinking of taking a heat gun to it after its stuck to be sure its good and dry before clearing.

yeah...lay a thin coat of urethane clear, apply bill, let tack up then coat well... that should do ok. Let us know how it turned out!

Rick, whatever you decide to use, make certain the bill is clean. If it has been handled it will have body oils on it. You can wash currency, then iron it with a household steam iron. Try that on your $1.

I haven't tried currency but we used to make some pretty cool decals by taking a magazine or similar photo and coating the photo side with clear coat fairly heavy. Let dry, then soak in water and rub (very carefully) the paper off the clear. Then a real light coat of white paint on the back side and trim. Place where you want it and clear the entire panel... Kind of the same thing, I would try 3m Super 77, that stuff doesn't let go at all!

Rick, this is the old "decoupage" technique. If you don't SEAL the entire paper item first, the back side will bleed through and will show on the front side. In decoupage, I use Elmers white water based glue, then, glue that to the board then clearcoat it. I think your first hurdle is to seal the ONE dollar bill with something that will have compatable properties for your adhesive. Like you said,,,,, the clear coat ain't nuthin!! Wow, good luck on this one, buddy!
Oh, yeah, and Roger is right about the adhesive. It is Elmers E-451 Spray Adhesive. Acid free, fast tack, dries clear, and "resists" bleed through. See it Here. Available at your friendly Wal-Mart stores. This is also an excellent adhesive for tacking your paper patterns to your HDU while cutting items with the ole RotoZip, router, jig saw, etc.

Rick, What John and Timi both says applies to your project...however it can be done.(I once put a complete set of Swallow Tail Butterfly wings under clear with this method ) I then painted the "Body" with Red Sables and Water based Acrylic Paint.....worked great. This was on the Hood Scoop of a Drag Car.....(It was so long ago they had not invented color photography),he he he he
