I need help. I have an opportunity to quote creating a billboard for someone that I work with, and I think I have just about everything covered.
The size is (2) 10’ x 20’s, so I figured (10) pieces of 4’ x 10 MDO board ( 1/2” painted front, primed back @ $56.31 ea. – $563.10 ), and enough edging ( $61.05 ) to cover all the pieces, and paint to do the layouts ( $110.00 for gloss enamel from Lowe’s ). Total price for materials is $735.00, but what about labor. I am thinking that it will take me about (4) days to paint everything and get it ready, but knowing that Murphy is a sign man, I am going to give myself an extra (2) days. I am thinking that the labor should run around $800.
So is $1,535 reasonable for a couple of boards this size?
Thanks in advance for any and all insight.

Hi! Since I'm so new at this, I wanted to give it a try, so we can both learn, so... If I'm learning to read the pricing guide, for 200 sq ft I get $2,397.50 for one color letters, no shade, no outline, and that's done in vinyl. The other guide reads $2,493.50, for a simple, direct layout. I'm trusting that means hand painted. These prices do not include installation and are for one. Then there is that 5% discount for multiple signs, and two counts as multiple. I think too, as the titles say, they are guides and we each have to determine what the traffic will bear in our specific area, and take into consideration the friend thing.
And to think all this time I thought Murphy was a mechanic!
I'm really eager to see what the outcome is here.....

ok make it simple guys....10x20=200 s.f. now if you are just painting on a surface that is painted and clean you can charge it at no less the $4 a s.f. so $4 x 200= $800.00 and 2 x that is $1600. so this is the lest you can do the work for(and make some money). now add to this the $800 for material, you need to mark up the material at least 20% for your getting it. so now instead of $800 you add $960 to the $1600. now you got $2660.00 also you can add more for graphic and art work...but this is the least you can do it for ...if you want to make some money to eat and go to a movie. at $1553.00 you are workin for free...comes out at $3.88 a sq ft and your buying the material for him instead of him buying it for you........at $2660.00 it works out about $6.65 a sq ft. see the difference. now whos gona install these boards? if your doing that you need to add $30-40 an hour for your labor to hang the signs.if your gona do work...GET PAID...what your worth.

I used the estimate pricing program and came up with $2560.00 plus tax & install.
Good luck,

I would price it at $2500 or $250 a panel for a simple layout, if you have room you can do both of these within a days time, or 1 a day if space is a problem... Installtion on their frame..within 10 miles, $75 per panel under 30' to top of sign... but like everyone here is always saying, figure YOUR time and materials to get to YOUR price, I know what it would take for me or one of my guys to do this but it may be a completely different story for you. Know your overhead, and know what your capibilities are for production in a given day, know what you need to make per hour and put it all together, above all get a good estimating program and use it if your not totally sure of what your getting into!!
Let us know what you do,
Shawn

My boss at work knows someone that wants it, and he is looking at having a digitally printed banner done, and they are running about $1100 each. (Edit : they are going to cost $685 each. And I found out there will only be one...)
He is the one installing them, so I won't have to worry about that. I am looking at an opportunity to make a little extra money doing something that I have done in the past. If he does go the digital banner route, I don't have the opportunity to make some extra jingle, but if I can convince him that painted MDO boards will look better / last longer, then it's money in my pocket.
As far as overhead, materials is all I would have.
As far as the mounting, it will be going on an existing billboard frame by someone else. Thanks for the help...

i can't add anything to the labor estimates, but since "edging" was included in the original estimate, i'm wondering what other materials you may need to purchase.
what will these plywood sheets will be attached to? will you need glue or screws, and is there already a frame, or will you need to build that too? a 200 square foot area can take a lot of wind load, so however it gets installed, its gonna take a lot of fasteners. (ie, you're not just gonna walk out there, tack up the sheet with a nail in each corner, and call it done with.)

One of those digitally printed banner thingies that wrap over an existing billboard might last 6 months. They're not made to last long-term. I wouldn't suggest installing one of those without experience, either.

Mark, I have done many billboards at race tracks. I would use 4'x10'x.040" aluminum with baked on finish. (many colors available) Wrisco sells them for about $36.00 per sheet! With the 10' sheets, no extra seams, no painting and light weight. I add a few rows of 2"x4" stringers to the posts and attach the panels. Cut 1" diamenter vinyl paint same color as background) to cover screws and you have a good looking billboard. If you have more questions, email me. Wrisco has a location in Georgia. 1-404-622-1066

Forgot about pricing!!!!! I would price a billboard this size between $1,500.00 to $2,800.00, depending on the artwork. Installation is not inclided! Remember! These things catch a LOT of wind! Installation can be costly!!
