I am doing a job for a customer who wants his signs to have a rainforest feeling without losing legibility. After a few experiments I came up with a good alternative to putting trees or leaves either on bacground or around copy. I placed application paper on the white background and then drew a single leaf and cut it out as a mask. Using enamel paints I then sprayed the leaf a nice crystal mint green with the paint thinned out considerably. I then quickly removed the mask and sprayed a heritage green over the wet paint. the first coat then bleeds up a bit through the dark green leaving an image of the leaf sitting very subtley on the background. The white vinyl lettering did not lose any contrast over the entire background. The beauty of this method is that there are no hard edges as the wet paint flattens softly out. by the way it is extra important to spray the work flat as the juicy paint will run if done vertically. I am now dying to try some more color combinations with different designs.

I did something similar for a subdivision, more of a field/creek/tree gig... I bled the background out and came in one inch from the edge of the sign with a half inch white rule line border. I chose that width to match the thin strokes on the copy. The top had a raised scallop in the middle. It looked great!
The white copy really oomph's off of the blues and greens!
Rainforest backgrounds give a lush, sweet, refreshing and peaceful feeling. Nice choice!
This reminds me of some work that I've seen done on the Gerber EDGE using Silver Medal foil on brushed alluminum polyester. Love the subtle approach...can add a real "classiness" to a design.

i usually lay down what ever subtle effect im going for in either silver or gold tautair then shoot the bg colour over, cause i like to work with transparent colours the 'gosts' only really appear at an angle
