Last Thursday evening, when I got home from work, I booted up my computer like I always do and checked my e-mail.
I had over 90 e-mails. All of them were from About.com. I contacted the company and they said they would remove me from their list. The next day, in comes a ton of porn spam from various sites thanking me for signing up.
In the past week, I've received more spam than I ever have since I first logged on to the net 10 years ago.
I've contacted my RoadRunner ISP, reported the problem and forwarded the "headers" to them.
Yesterday, I received an e-mail (it was a mass mailing, I think) from my ISP explaining that they are instituting a new anti-spam program due to a large number of complaints.
I just got an e-mail from another 'Head a few minutes ago (one with whom I'm not on good terms with) asking me that if I was signing him up to various sites, to please stop.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
I'm beginning to wonder if someone is trying to stir something up.
*******
Just wanted to add, if anyone here is on RoadRunner wants to report spam problems, send an e-mail to abuse@rr.com. Be sure to include the headers of each of the spam/e-mails.

One thing that may help - works for me at least - is to have one email address just for junk mail. ANY TIME a website or anything else asks me for my email address (i.e. anytime I order anything on-line) ALWAYS enter that email address.
Keep one email address PRIVATE and only use it for private, personal correspondence. Don't give it out unless you KNOW the person. That way you will know that anything on the "junk" address is probably junk and anything on the private address is personal mail. I've been doing that for years and yes, I get tons of "spam" on my junk address but I've never gotten any on my private one.

Well, after a couple short e-mails, it seems that this other person and another 'Head are getting the same spam from the same people as I'm getting.
I suspect that either someone is trying to have a joke at our expense or a "scraper" program has gone through and collected our "posted" e-mail addresses. The only way to know for certain if its a scraper program is if there are several 'Heads getting the same spam.

Vic,
Yes, I have the program installed and I love it. I do a lot of surfing and its amazing how many "spy" programs find themselves on my hard-drive at the end of the day without my permission.
I have been getting extremely agrivated over the amount of Spam I've been getting lately as well the killer was a porn one about a week a go that was titled " boating" it not only had links but actual nude photos in it.
Thanks for posting the link to spam killers, but what is this adware and spy programs all about?

Maybe you're on to something here. I've been getting the same stuff. Lot's of porn stuff and thank you for signing up at our free listing or whatever, I don't spend the time to read it. I've even tried on a few to go to the "unsubscribe" and it comes back undeliverable! I've been holding my shift key and mark a block and hit delete. Thanks for the tips!

Ditto to what Brian said - NEVER, NEVER, EVER go to their Unsubscribe link or reply in anyway - don't even open the email just delete it without reading it. If you open it, it could have a virus.

The really stupid thing about spam is that it can't be a very effective sales/marketing tool. I don't know why anybody bothers spamming to begin with.
Have any of you ever purchased anything as a result of receiving spam from someone?
Ultimately, spammers will find they don't have a market and simply go away. Unfortunately, it might take them (or their clients) a while to figure it all out.

On the spam & virus topic, I have recieved mail from various folks (at least one 'head) who have an address book of contacts & mail out a joke or something to all contacts in the book. When I get these I fear that they have now put my address (shown as "recipient") onto the drive of all other recipients, who then may forward the joke to others multiplying the places my addy may sit un-deleted waiting for some kind of worm to start mailing itself out to me.
So if this fear is based on an actual risk, then to those of you out there using your contact list in this way, be aware of the risk. (& delete my address please)

hey glenn, who's that other "head" sending you emails? send me their email address so I can set my email forwarding to send all my spam directly to him.
And yes, DONT ever "click to unsubscribe".. it just tells them they have a valid email address.
And like I've told my dad many many many times, if you dont want spam from porn sites, quit visiting porn sites!
If you disable cookies in your web browser, the web sites that use cookies to obtain your email address wont be able to obtain it anymore. You can still enable them for certain sites, like the BB.

I had 700 e-mails from the same place on the same topic back to back the other day and my e-mai account got frozen. I hadn't checked it in a couple of days and there is no telling what I missed.I guess it was an e-mail bomb or something.
