Jack Bronzeo got me thinkin' of color. I just love yellow. I am thinking of painting the livingroom yellow. Not just any yellow......I love vividness. Then I want either a purple or deep red couch....accented with yellow or sage green chairs.
I find myself using quite a few color combos for signs over and over. Like navy blue with white letters accented with imitation gold or deep burgundy. Or forest green with cream and gold.
Colors really do have an effect on us. I want to paint the bathroom mint green Ahhhh yes......that color is relaxing to me.
So.....what colors are in your homes? what is your favorite color?

Cheryl,

As an old cowboy I love bright colors. Azure Blue like the Wyoming sky. Brillant greens as the aspens and pine forests. Blazing red and pink like the sunset. I lvoe ranibows and if I could I would paint my living room like this.

This may give you an idea of what I mean! LOL

I love rich forest greens, and warm taupes. Anything with a slightly rustic used feeling. Rust is my all time favorite accessory color.

We have a heritage style home, copied from a 1900's floorplan which was love at first sight for me. Our rooms are sectioned off but not with doors, just sections which makes it really easy to play with colors.

Our kitchen/dining area is a rust/brick red on the walls. Our main tv/living room is forest green walls. All the rest of the hallways/kitchen etc is a medium taupe. Then I accessorize with the rust and green and taupe theme throughout the rest of the house for balance. I love the strong cozy colors on those two feature rooms yet the hallway tones it all down and allows it.

I had painted a farm mural in Cody's bedroom and was ready to get him a John Deere tractor bed set. It was awesome, fit right in even with the rest of the house and he loved the tractors! We go into the store today to pick up the lovely taupe and green set, and lo and behold, they also had in stock Thomas the Tank train bedding. Imagine if you will, soft natural colors in his room, and a BRIGHT BLUE BEDDING SET screaming at you as you enter. Arg. I had to get the train bedding. It's what HE wanted. He pulled it right out of the bag in the store, layed it on the floor, kicked off his shoes and jacket and layed down, and named the trains on the cover. Sigh... The thing looks like it's a flashing neon sign to me, complete with the buzzing static noise of shorting out. OMG.

I guess bright olympic type blue isn't for me, but it sure charges Cody's batteries. Oh well, time to get out the paints again and brighten up that restful mural. I must love this blue, I must love this blue...

P.S. On a work related note, my two most successful logos were done in forest green and taupes. No luck with olympic blue yet. Hmmm...

Deep greens are a favorite, from chromatic dark green through essex green (a Benjamin Moore color, almost black) for backgrounds, then various tones of ivory and gold or mustard yellow. I like the palette of golds created by mixing purple into chrome yellow or primrose yellow - add purple a drop at a time, a little goes a long way. To outline ivory letters on a dark green ground I use fire red, but only as a thin outline, too much gets weird... Another trick is to add a little of your background color to each of the other colors, which can allow some otherwise odd combos to work without clashing.

The colors that I like on signs would not be what I'd want to live with in my home.In the house I like it soft and warm and to see contrast enhanced by shadows and sensitively proportioned reveals. On signs much more drama is needed to evoke emotion in a competitive environment.

Colors for signs seem to go in waves for us. Last week seemed to be teal and black week, the week before, dark forest green with gold letters and red accents, and of course the tons of calls for patriotic colors over the last months.

For home, I seem to use themes in different rooms. The great room is done oriental with lots of muted plums and sages, leading into the dining room with china blues. From there the kitchen goes a little more gardenlike with blues and sunflowers. The bathroom in this end of the house is itty bitty and painted a dark sage green(we laughingly call it the "green room" for more than one reason). The other end of the house is our bedroom done in a jungle type theme complete with a 4and a half foot live iguana(okay, so he is more rainforest, but heck) Still trying to decide on what to do with the master bath at that end, curently it has a flowery type thing going on it which I'm not all to thrilled with. Upstairs, my daughters room has a dolphin theme with lots of oceany blues and her bathroom is done with a seashell type thing(soft coraly colors) which she decorated herself(and did a pretty good job for a nine yr old) Have another bedroom up there that I'm still up in the air about. Last project I'm up against in the house is the basement which hubby is starting to finish off...4 more rooms. I'm think old pool hall feel for the rec room, but I'm starting to get tapped out for the rest of it [Eek!] Any ideas [Confused]

Cam Essex green is one of my favorite colors for sure. I love Benjamin Moore paint.
Jacki..is your house old? The last house we lived in was a 1910 bungalow style home. I used Essex green for the doors. Huge living room done in rich tones to go with the hardwood floors. Deep greens in the family room to go with the light pine walls. It was a great house. I love old homes. The house had a great view of Lake Washington..so I decided to bring in the outdoor colors. Blue and yellow were used upstairs in the bedrooms.

Hi Cheryl,

The colour I seem to use the most of in most everything are sunny yellows. Those in the orangy or gold range.
I think it's a nice warm happy colour. Can also be pretty classy in the gold tones.

In signs I favour warm colours. I like creams, cranberry reds, golds, tans and taupes. I also really like reddish mahogany browns, hunter greens, olive greens and bright reds.
Depends on the mode of sign though. I can get kind of playful with cartoony primary colours too.

For my home I seem to have an assortment going on.
I have a 1924 bungalow home.
I just did something different and painted our bedroom a rather weird colour. It's like carmel, kinda butterscotchy with white trim.
Last year I painted one main accent wall in my showroom with a goldenrod, and did a faux finish of a lighter ivory over it.
The walls in my studio are stark white, but since my studio is cluttered with fun & colourful stuff to look at, I thought white was the way to go.
My living room is a sort of driftwood taupe with white trim.
My dining room is creamy yellow w/ white trim.
My kitchen is schoolbus yellow w/ white trim. Zang! I have only a small amount of wall space in there, so it's not smothering with it.

Cheryl, if you decide to go with a vivid yellow, my suggestion would be to do a small portion of the room with it. Maybe just one large accent wall. A friend of mine did what you are talking about. Complete with the bright purple counch and bright red leather armchairs. He painted only one wall yellow though, and it completed the mix perfectly.

Here's a part of my kitchen.

Boy this post is starting to smack of Christopher Lowell:)

My favorite color is a bright light blue like process blue, I use it and a lot of teals and dark magentas in my work. Haven't figured out how to get them in the house yet:) I've got a major redecorating ahead of me at home. I did the living room white to be safe and make it liveable for right now, I'll get back to it later. I plan on doing my bedroom in a light peach and a green ( hunter, I dunno all these color names ) I plan on buying a scandanavian bed I have my heart set on and doing a beach mural behind it.

As far as the bright yellow rooms , I used to live way off in the country back in the seventies in my hippie days. We had a tiny house with a small room right off the front porch we used as a sitting room. It was done in a really bright yellow, the furniture was all white wicker and there were a lot of ferns and plants sitting and hanging everywhere. That room was my favorite room in the house. Sitting in that wicker rocker watching and listening to a summertime rain shower was soooooooooo soothing:)

My computer room has light yellow walls although some folks call them bright ( to me bright is screaming zonker yellow ) the carpet is like a dark rubine red...kinda lively in here:)

Everyone should have at least 1 room that's a Pepto Bismol Pink. That's the same color they paint holding cells for violent psychotic prisoners. It's supposed to have a calming, soothing effect, but not for prolonged periods of time.

I've had days when a room with that sort of color scheme might have been helpful...and I'm sure that others here could benefit as well. [Smile] [Smile]

cheryl,

its a newer home, built in 1995, we bought it last year. I've never been quite sure how to classify the style of it though.

Ken, does that pepto pink work on kids? Maybe thats what I should paint my spare bedroom [Big Grin]

OOOOoh when I hear wicker, I think of a veranda painted with columns that palm plants are sitting by/around and the ocean/beach off into infinity...kinda like a tropical vacation feel goin on, only thing missing is the guys with the drinks, hehehe!

I know that trees in the corners with nice far off places on the middle of the walls give the room a round feel, comforting. The balance this creates is much like being outside, no walls.

I love all the visuals I got while reading this thread!

Like James Taylor sings -
"Deep greens and blues are the colors I choose. Won't you let me go down in my dreams."
Have you ever seen the Rip Tide? Green water on one side and blue blue water on the other. The interface is a deep murky gold, not really a combination of the water colors, but it own color maybe because of all the plantlife reflecting the sun.
