Believe it or not a guy from the Military just dropped off what looks like 100mm Shells.. without the Powder of course, they are brass, polished brass. He is going to use these as trophies to give away to some guys who are retiring. I have to clear coat them and then paint some colors, flags, on them. Of course the clear is to keep them from Tarnishing... Any suggestions on the type of clear, one that will stick? Thanks

Well, being an"old army dude" The brass buttons on the dress outfit(class a's)was preserved with laquer, I know this(as well as other army dudes) cause we had to polish it off with Brasso !!
So, Laquer is easy, clear, comes in gloss or semi gloss, and its tough enough to be on a trophy.

The lacquer used on ploshed brass, such as Army Belt Buckles, lamps, furniture ia an Acrylic-butyrate....tough as horseshoe nails! While most acrylic laquers such as Krylon will work, they will not take the abuse of the above.

Go to www.por15.com There is a specific for permanent clearcoating of highly polished metals from those guys. I think it's called "Crystal" sumthin' or other.

I lettered up a 500 pound bomb on my back porch about 4 years ago. The neighbors came over drinkin beer and wanted to deposit it nose 1st in the base commanders yard!

Incryliac, is the most used that I know of for indoor outdoor use. Sherwin Williams and other large paint companies make what is called a metal lacquer which will work as well and what I use on my bronzes all the time. With any you will certainly want to dip in very clean acetone and not touch with even a finger before you spray finish. If you do it will oxidize into a dark fingerprint under the lacquer. If their is any contamination.....any......it will show up with hours to days under the lacquer. If you use Brasso or other cleaners, make sure you soak all this stuff off. I have had a lot of experience finishing bronze and brass is very similar but less contaminatable which will help . Bronzeo
