does anybody know of a reliable way to protect an 8x4 sign from graffiti.. the sign is half brushed and half computer cut cast vinyl. I want something that is economical yet reliable.... I have heard there is a paint but not sure what effects it would have on vinyl...
regards

Leslie,

Try using Pelucid. It works. 3M also makes a anti-grafitti overcoat. These should work for you.

Have a great one.

the 3M overlaminates (3M #1150 and #1160) come in a max width of 40". or, at least that's what my local supplier offers. so you'll end up with a seam. other than that, the stuff works fine.

i don't know about Pelucid, but others here do.

there are a few other, similar, spray or roll-on materials that my supplier carries, but i haven't used them.

one suggestion i heard here is to just have your customer WAX the sign every month or so. a simple coat of a quality automotive wax makes a good graphiti barrier, and its cheap. of course, it has to be re-applied every couple of months.

Hi Leslie, yes there is a good anti graffiti paint available in Aus. It is called "Barricaid" and is manufactured by a western Australian company by the name of "Gecko". It is a solvent based clear that you can either spray or roll, but does not brush well. The phone # is (08) 9309 4099 or the fax # is (08) 9309 4142. I have sprayed it over vinyl no worries and it lasts extremely well provided you follow the instructions carefully. Hope this helps, Have a good one [Big Grin] I see "Supply One" are in victoria. they would sell it. They're phone # is 03 9459 0000 and fax is 03 9459 2277.

The Grip Guard paint system from Azko Nobel is also graffiti resistant after about 20 days of curing. There is a gloss clear as part of that system that should work well for you, and if you need to matte it out there is a matte paste available.

I've got a MDO sign here painted with Grip Guard that we let clients spraypaint on, the only deal is that they have to clean it off when they're through [Wink] .

A word af caution though, these paints contain a whole pile of isocyanates so they're pretty horrible when rendered aerosol.
