I have the regular version of AI 8 that a friend sold to me for $10.00. Can I update that to the new version by just buying the update version? Also, I got Photoshop 5.5 LE with my Epson 1270 printer. With it not being the full version , can I buy the updated version with out buying the whole version of Photoshop? Sorry I am not good on these ole computers put I learn as I go. Somebody, please be a dear and help this computer dummy with this questions. By the way, I am learning coreldraw by the dummies book (also photoshop).

For your friend to legally sell you AI 8.0, your friend can no longer use it. If this is the case then assuming your friend is still around, you can have them sign Adobe's "transfer of Ownership" form. Call Adobe & give them a fax number to get the form. If your friend was a liscensed/registered owner with no further use for the program, & will sign the form, you just saved $500. Your upgrade will then run about $125 - $150. I was lucky & got my original Illustrator for about that cheap. I've paid for about 3 upgrades so far.
As for your other question, are you sure it was not Photo Deluxe LE? I think that is more likely. If so You may save about $100 off the $600 price of Photoshop as I did.

Adobe PhotoShop LE would now only upgradable to Adobe PhotoShop Element. For Adobe Illustrator, check the registration of your friend.
For any questions about products, you could post on this board. You could aslo register yourself to Adobe User-to-Use forums. Many customers of those products are exchanging their trublles and solutions there : http://www.adobe.com/support/forums/main.html
You should also register for free to some newletters. For instance, I recommand you to sign up at http://www.elementktips.com. You will receive one tips a week in your mailbox. This slow flow gives you the time to learn or to remind you some tips.

Doug, yes there is a Photoshop LE. It is a light version of full blown Photoshop which simply has some of the cool filters missing. A few years ago it was a popular bundle with medium priced scanners where the full version was included with higher end scanners.
Cpack, hope you're learning Corel on a Windows machine. Corel on a Mac sucks. It's the only program that crashes my Mac, and on a regular basis. Its slow and a super memory hog.

Well learn something new everyday. For the full version to come bundled with high-end scanners, that must be a mighty spendy scanner. I love Photoshop, but it was a little tough forking out 6 bills for it. (Well 5 with my Photo Deluxe)

Hey Cynthia, the upgrade to illustrator 9 or 10 from 8 is a waste ( that is if you are designing to cut ). The new versions of illustrator are neat, but the vectorized outlines shadows & etc. are very complicated. Ill. 8 will do all you want. I f you want it for print format, it's another question altogether.

I disagree with your opinion about shadow s and effect.; Adobe Illustrator 10 is a bargain.
Once you have learn few rules to setup your artwork, -yes, you just have to learn how to-, it's easy and strong, as you can give you own parameters for anything.
NCS MagiSign CD includes a style for outline and for shadow respecting those few rules.
Meaning in few seconds you have move from the word "Pizza" to the word "Pitta" as effects, meaning you can edit : • the content (could be text or paths) • the parameters of the effect (shadow offset, etc) • the shape of the result (enveloppes) • the manner the result will be setup (pathfinders).
Combine the effects you need in the "Appearance" palette, check the position of each path of the Appearance, and it's done.
The single drawback is that the Adobe manual is not done for signmakers, so you could believe are not done for signmaking.
NCS MagiSign manual and website will soon be updated to include the few tips you need to know.
I keep at your disposal to explain you how to proceed.
