Meet & Workshop Saturday, March 9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Sign Graphics classroom at the college, 400 West Washington Blvd., L.A., 90015
Doc Guthrie & I will attempt to show some quick versions of faux marble and wood grains. Quick, basic, fun stuff for backgrounds, not complete dashboard quality, there's not enough time, but I'll show tools, supplies, books, samples and let everybody get their hands dirty.
Prices vary - Free to alumni association members (from the last time), $40 to join alumni association, $20 to all others, but I think Doc gives a discount to students. (?) These funds are a huge chunk of what runs the class re: supplies, and it's a write-off.

One of my favorite memories from our California trip was the morning Si and I spent with Doc and his students. I can't say enough about how much Doc Guthrie impressed me as a person and especially a teacher. Don't miss this one!

I forgot to mention that the dues for being in the association are due again - not sure how Doc works it, better ask him, not me. It seems to me the last time he did this was two years ago, so returning alumni members prabably don't really get in free after all, but rather have to pony up again. In any case it's one of the most worthy things for sign professionals to contribute to, Doc knocks himself out to teach these kids the trade, as Mr. Earnest did. Doc takes a van load of hopefuls up to the Micro Meet every year and I feel that alone is worth me kicking in for. Most of the students are inner city kids and this is their chance to get into the job force, for some the road trip to Petaluma is their first time out of downtown L.A., and the LetterHead Spirit is their first experience away from gangs, cops, and muggings like they're used to.
Me - I just want to see some old friends (and I DO mean OLD!) and push some paint around.
If you can't go, send Doc a couple bucks so maybe he can buy a book of gold next year, and write it off. Make check out to: L.A.T.T.C. Foundation, and mail to: Doc Guthrie c/o Sign Graphics, L.A.T.T.C., 400 W. Washington Blvd., Los Angeles, CA, 90015 _____________________________________________
Yeah, Joey - I was at the school on Monday, I signed up to take the class again, after 25 years away, so I can learn about 'puters - and the student work in the classroom is really good looking stuff. Doc is heavy (no pun) on layout. He says he has one or two superstars every semester, and the rest are at least inspired to try.

Well, Roger, I'd be hard pressed to find someone who'd ever turn down a freebie anything - and whilst I don't personally advocate the use of stickers it IS a part of Doc's training. If they aren't already using RT, I'm sure the class will find it useful, and there should be a number of folks there that will see your product - make sure your name is proudly displayed and Doc & I will do our best to get a plug in for you.

I'm a graduate of Doc. Before this class i had no sense of direction. I graduated class of 99 from high school and was completly lost. Doc not only trains his students in all aspects of the sign buisiness except neon and silk screen. I walked out out of his class with:
discipline
confidence
expert sign design skills
old fashion handlettering skills
vinyl application
sub- contracting skills
sign specific marketing pricing
a career now I work with Ron Percell and because I graduated from trade-tech.
any support you can give would be greatly appreciated and worth it.
