Well, after reading a reply to my earlier post about installing a font in signmaking software, I decided to go poking in the Windows/Control Panel/Fonts folder.

The reply said its not good to have a lot of fonts because it slows your computer down. So, I see all these fonts in the Fonts folder and figure, gee, when I actually buy a signmaking program, I'll have even MORE fonts - why don't I start deleting some of these NOW that I'll never use?? [Frown]

Apparently I deleted a font that was used whenever I enter text, such as I am typing right now. That font no longer shows, and has been replaced by a different, less-readable font. [Roll Eyes]

I know, the obvious answer it to just go to the Recycle Bin and re-install all the fonts I deleted. But hey, I'm WAY too clever for that, you see, I have my Recycle Bin set to AUTOMATICALLY delete a file as soon as it's put in the bin. [Frown] So I can't go fish it out and reinstall it - it's gone.

Is there somehow I can go in and change this font to something else? Is it a "default" setting or something like that? It doesn't show up as a different font once the message is posted, but as I'm typing right now, it's a different font than what used to show up whenever I typed an email or entered text somewhere... [Confused]

Feel free to have a hee-haw or two at my expense... [Razz]

I'm sorry Peter.....I AM having a snort and a chuckle because you see I deleted a bunch of fonts in SignLab....and messed it up big time once. I also deleted from the window font file thinking I too was so clever.....not sure what I did to fix that problem. I am lucky I can get my son to help me with my flub ups. I am sure someone here can help you fix your stuff. (snort snort)

OK Peter...I will have a hee-haw at your expense... BUT...Only because, a few years ago, I did EXACTLY the same thing that you did! What a bummer!! My solution at the time was to get a buddy to re-format my hard drive and re-install Windows..I think it was Win 3.1 so it was a while ago. I am sorry to say that I can't offer you a way to restore the "system fonts" that you must have deleted..Hopefully someone else can offer concrete advice.

The only reason I replied to your post is because I wanted you to know that you are not alone in doing something that you later regret! [Smile]

In fact I'll bet that there are a lot more folks than just you and I that have done it! [Roll Eyes]

Duuhhh! Also guilty....did it many moons ago with Win95. [Frown]

Solution was to simply reinstall windows! [Smile] Friend did the same with Win98SE...don't know if it will work with WinME orXP.

Give it a try....sure beats reformatting!

Just thinking out loud here, but isn't is possible to copy all the non TTF system fonts from the same version of Windows that Peter runs and simply recopy them into his Windows Fonts directory?

I don't have a solution to what you've already done but a suggestion. Run, don't walk, run and buy a piece of software called GO-BACK by Roxio. You can literally "go back" to a point in time where you want your computer to be. If it worked perfectly this morning then you can set it back to this morning. Yes, you will lose whatever you did since then but I can't tell you how many times I have used it. My Gateway computer came with it installed but I went and bought a copy for my laptop. I can't rave about it enough.

Hey, I like this kinda thinking, Steve. There were a few fonts that didn't have the TTF logo, and I did delete a few of them. I have Windows 98 Second Edition 4.10.2222A (I don't know if all those numbers are necessary). [Big Grin]

Good to see I'm not alone, hahaha. GREAT MINDS THINK ALIKE, EH??? [Cool]

Peter, you dont need to reinstall windows, you can either get the fonts from someone with the same version of windows as you have then install them like normal, or you can extract the files from the Windows98SE Installation CD.

Here's directions on how to extract the files yourself:

SUPER, Mike, THANK YOU!

Kimberly, I downloaded the demo version of Roxio GoBack (wasn't able to retrieve my fonts because it happened prior to the download). It sounds like a good thing to have, HOWEVER, since GoBack is running and monitoring everything, it causes my computer to make this CONSTANT "trickling" sound which is driving me absolutely bonkers! [Eek!] I think I'm going to un-install it....

I am the WORST person to answer computer questions, since I am usually ASKING them... but just thinking out loud...

Can't you go into START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL and double click on the DISPLAY icon...

Then go into the APPEARANCE tab...

Then go thru the various ITEMS and select different fonts, colors, etc for them? Would this cover it somehow?

Usually when I do stuff in the computer, I accidently get it right... then promptly forget how I did it.

Good Luck!!

Peter, I don't even hear the noise anymore. In my humble opinion, a little white noise in the background is worth the possibility of saving your data. It's obviously your call.

Had to get into the "me too" line.

When I bought my first computer, I decided we needed more fonts. Bought a CD with 1500 fonts. Stuck the CD in, went to install fonts, select all, OK. Well... it stopped installing somewhere in the "C"s.

Called my "computer" buddy, who proceeded to tell me that windows can't handle that many fonts, and I needed to remove some of them. So... I go through looking at the samples and removing ones I don't like, or don't think I will ever use.

The computer died, or at least I thought it had. Turns out I had deleted a font that windows uses to operate. My buddy had to reinstall windows(no reformat) and all my files were still there, and everything worked fine.

I really watch what fonts I delete now.

I think Steve and Mike have the best idea for your situation.

You can go on the web and download a shareware or freeware undelete program which will enable you to recover the deleted files. If you decide to try this, do it soon before your computer writes over the portion of your hard drive that the files were setting on. If that happens, you will not be able to recover them.

Dana,
great find, that looks like it would work...except...the drop down menu labelled "Fonts" on the APPEARANCE screen does not hi-lite. There is no font showing and it does not respond to a mouse-click [Frown]

If the shareware undelete idea doesn't work, I'll have to try and re-install Windows...gulp... [Eek!]
