I have a problem with my Flexi-Sign program I can't figure out. I have version 6. When I type a font and then use the pick tool the red path lines do not line up on what I type. When I go to "arrange-path direction- automatic" then it all lines up, but, then flexi does not recognize it as a font.

I have no idea what I did to change this setting, never seen this in 2 years of running the program. The book is no help and customer support at Flexi wants 30 bux before they will attempt to fix this.

Thanks in advance

Steve, Flexi automatically changes the text to curves whenever you use a tool, such as Distort. If you try to select the entire word as text, you will find that it is no longer considered as text and a word will be separate objects(not letters) but curves. If you need to change back to text you can use the undo feature and get back to where you have text again, but you loose every step you took on the way. This is a hard lesson to learn, but you have to keep it in mind, because it creeps up often. I learned mine the hard way by not doing spell checks before using available tools.

I dont think thats the problem. Before I start to distort the letters- I always hit "duplicate" just for that reason. The problem that I'm having is the "red" path that goes around the letters when I use the "pick" tool is'nt lining up- I'm sure its a setting that I inadvertantly made a change to.

I haven't e-mailed flexi yet-thought I would try here 1st

Mark Rugan does the Flexi training and has a web site at givemehelp.com. He also has a BB for Flexi users to post these questions. Perhaps a solution from that source might be quicker.

Flexi does not convert text-to-curves when most special effects are applied. Things like outlines, shadows, and distortions do not convert the base text object to a path-based object. This was a major inconvenience with programs like CASmate and Flexi 5 and below, but is not a problem with newer object-oriented applications like Flexi 6 or CorelDRAW 8 or above.

There are several text-related settings in the Flexi Preferences dialog box, which may resolve your problem. There is a more complete and comprehensive way to get Flexi back to a known configuration- but it requires that you re-configure your output devices and any menu customizations that you’ve set up over time.

With Flexi closed, simply click the ‘Clear Preferences’ item located under the FlexiSIGN option in your Windows Programs Menu (Click Start ->Programs->FlexiSIGN->Clear Preferences). Again, this will reset the entire program back to the basic configuration, almost like reinstalling it from scratch. It will reset any and all settings back to default.

I sent this page to Mark Rugan and he responded back to me directly.....

The problem: After typing text, there is a RED line around the edge that does not match the text exactly.

The Reason: The RED line is a PREVIEW line that shows the location and shape of the text, so when moved it lifts up and you can see where you are placing the text.

The Solution: In the PREFERNCES menu under EDIT, Select the TOOLS TAB, then Scroll the left window to TEXT TOOL, you will find that the "Smooth edges of screen fonts" is checked, UNCHECK this box. The red preview line will now fit the text exactly.

The Explaination: Smoothing edges of the font, cause the font to DISPLAY sharper and smoother on screen, but does NOT effect output. It is merely a method of seeing smother edges on the screen, since rougher edges bothers some people. The Red preview cannot match this smoothing, thus the gaps that appear. Unchecking this will not effect your output and in fact will help redraws happen a little faster.

Great! I'll print this page and take it with me to the shop tomorrow. I've been running Flexi for 2 years now and had no idea there was a site for dummys like me! Thanks for the help and the link!
