I need a new computer for work.
I am in the sign business.
Anyone want to make a recommendation?
My systems analyst has health problems and can no longer work.

Hard to beat dell dimension 8200. Lots of bang for the buck.
Depending on when you buy they will throw in 3 year onsite warranty. Opt for any P4 1.8 to 2.2 processor, more important is a minimum of 256 meg pc800 ddr memory (more if the budget can take it), opt for at least 40 gig 7200 rpm hard drive. Tied to a 64 meg video card it will make a dandy system. Add the HK-695 speaker system and it'll blow you away !!

Why buy a general purpose computer, when you can have one custom built to your needs.....a few hundred $$ cheaper?
Check out http://www.pricewatch.com
find one that is near you and give them a call! You can add or subtract components from the advertized specials, to suite your needs!

Couple of months ago Marty needed a new puter, got her a P3 850, 128 PC133RAM, C/d, speakers, K/b, etc for $405, and picked it up the next day...now the same puter is $372. [Smile]

Happy shopping! [Smile]

Hey, Michael,

With all due respect to Si, I have to agree on the Dell 8200. My bride and I just bought one of them for her use. We overspent, because she let me set it up the way I would want it for the shop and/or gaming. P4, 1.7 GHz, 512 DDRAM, 64 meg NVidia video card, decent speakers, 3 year on-site warranty etc. If I can ever get it away from her, it will be my next shop 'puter. Wish me luck, and good shopping to you.

One other thought-- remember the tax deduction angle. Whether you spend a little or a lot, there is a write-off in there somewhere.

Have to agree with the crowd on this one I've got 4 Dells now, the newest is a P-4 1.3 with 764 mb ram Nvidia g3 32 and works like a champ. The only way I buy them from Dell now a days though is from there refurb site on the web. I've done this now for the last 3 units and have full warranty as well as the extended that you can get for an extra fee. You get whatever is listed on the unit that your looking at but the price can't be beat (for a Dell) when you buy them this way. If they don't have what your looking for one day just wait a day or 2 and it will show up. I'm going after a server next.

Got news for ya O.P. - - I am a Guru - -
I've built them from scratch, repaired them, reconfigured them, patched them, upgraded them, built many networks, built a web server, mail server, ftp server thats sitting (working) on my floor ... done it all. I do my own maintenance on all my devices and printers including a ricoh color copier and a Kip engineering laser printer. I did a ten year stint as a techie for Xerox in my former life.

Still figure Dell is the best deal.. Even for someone like me .. I like the quality of the components they use (no mickey mouse fans to burn out and fry the processor). The new clamshell box is a delight to work on, everything is easy to reach and absolutely no tools are needed to swap things or add cards. The components are well matched and tested to work together without conflicts. I like the fact that when you phone for support (24/7) they know exactly what components are in your machine right down to the chipset. Nothing is proprietory, (unlike compaq) I can add off the shelf accessories, or legacy parts from other machines without voiding warranties. They don't haggle over shipping, they pay shipping both ways, and don't wait for returned used parts before they ship replacement.

I bought last one (8200) in November, 3 year warranty onsite was free along with lifetime phone support, as was upgrade to 40 meg 7200 rpm and upgrade to 256 meg ddr memory, 1.8 ghz, 64 mg video, came to just over $1200 cdn (~$800 us). Included in that was the operating system and microsoft works. Like any major corporation Dell does extensive marketing, you just have to do your research and buy when they offer the best deals.

I could build one cheaper, but I don't know if I could build (and support one) better.

Building your own pc is no big deal, many can do it but why bother. There are many companies willing to do it for you at the same price.
Companies like Dell are more, but you get time tested parts and their buying power to get some good software and OS thrown in.

I got a Dell Optiplex PIII 933 with 128 ram and a 16MB video card for $650 about this time last year. Should be cheaper now. I paid a little more for a 3 year onsite warranty.

A few weeks ago my hard drive crashed and a tech was here the next day at 9:00 am to replace it.

Can't blame Dell for the drive. They all suck!

OP, I used to build my own systems. Tried every OS there is. I just got sick of doing it. Let someone else fix the stuff!!
