Just a quick update on our decision to quit smoking. After the first week Shirl and I are still smoke-free and not suffering any adverse effects.

The only annoying thing that both of us noticed was that we would "automatically" reach for the pack of smokes that was always in a certain place...Like for me it was to the right of the keyboard or in a certain place on the dash of the van.

Next update will be at the end of the first month.

Congratulations! I quit in Nov. 1978 - imagine all the money I've saved!

Some suggestions which help the cravings (which you may already know):

Practice deep breathing. One thing smokers do is inhale deeply, and that's something you want to keep up when you quit. Getting all that good oxygen into your system will help you stay a non-smoker.

Drink lots of orange juice. You need the vitamin C. It helps.

Drink lots of water, it helps too.

Picture the tar-coated lung tissue returning to its pink, perky self.

Keep us posted, you're doing great! And, it does take a long time to get past the automatic motions you've been making for so many years.

Hey Dave and Shirl,

When you see those ugly things you cough up just keep reminding yourself thats what you were inhaling into your lungs and now your body is finally getting rid of it for you. Dont give up hope and water is probably the safest things to take place of those cigarettes

I been smoke free since December 23,1989

PS: Boston Marathon for you guys next!!!!
