Just throwing this out there, lets say I required a digital print for a billboard, 8' x 20'. About how much, and does anybody here deal with the west coast? (Canada)
Also, what is required for artwork? The image I want to use in the print on disk is 600 dpi at 3" x 12". Will it look like crap when printed so large, do I need better? I can go on and on with the questions, but thats a start. So, who here might be able to help?

Hi Tim:

For a billboard, dpi at output size can be pretty low. Even 50 dpi will look great, which turns your 3" x 12" file into a 36" x 144" image. But, a 3' x 12' images doesn't scale (proportionally) to 8' x 20'. Something's gotta give.

For output, I'd encourage you to contact Fleet Graphics at 208-267-1013. They're a major wide format digital wholesaler, just a couple miles south of the BC border.

Not sure about tthe West coast. But the large billboards we have done are printed at 18 dpi & look Great from where they are seen. I've got one with a photo of a street bike viewed from about 70 to 100 feet & it looks great.
I usually send a tif at 1/4 scale sometimes you need to burn it on a CD if the res is to large multiply it out like Jim said it only needs to be equal to output res. at full scale.

Thanks Jim, and true that it doesn't scale out, but the digital print will be the top 2/3's or so and the rest can be acheived with paint and vinyl lettering. Also, thanks Gary, I was concerned as how low the dpi could go, it will be about 60 ft from the passing vehicles (30mph).
Also, The billboard will need to look sharp for 3years and I'll probably have to sign to that, so will this dictate the type of digital print I need, regarding the UV?
So what is the approximate cost /sgft for this schtuff? Just wondering if this whole Idea is within the budget given.

As for cost The place here in PA charges $1.65/sq.ft. I've heard of one do around Maryland charges $1.25/sq.ft. Also when I told you I use .tif files that's when the file is a bitmap If It vector I'll use .eps or .ai, As for the 3 years I'd check with the printer maybe they'll be able to clear coat it for extra protection.
