Besides Flexi-sign or Corel.

Flexi is now so outdated and upgrades for Mac are non existent.

Corel freezes all the time.

We have used Macromedia Freehand for almost twelve years. It's not specifically a sign program, but it is an illustration program and has great text handling capabilities. Adobe Illustrator would be another one - we have a copy but have never gotten that familiar with it.

Which version of Mac CorelDRAW are you using? 6 was horrid and 8 was a RAM hog, but 10 seems to be working so far. I have tried it under OS 9.1 and OS X, with good luck at both.

Granted, if you have upgraded your Mac from OS 9 to OS X, there may be font issues to contend with. There is more info on this at the corel.com Mac CorelDRAW newsgroup. Also, it is apparent that many of the printer and cutter/plotter manufacturers have yet to embrace OS X, so the availability of drivers and control panels may be limited. In theory, this simply means that you would design in OS X and print/cut in classic mode (OS 9).

Rob, I use Adobe Illustrator version 8 for all of my layouts, along with Macromedia Freehand version 5 and 8. I use an older version of FLexicut for cutting. I've learned these programs as good as I can on my own and with help from friends, and Illustrator is King in my book. What type of Mac are you working on? I have an 8500 upgraded to a G3 with 256 megs of ram. Sometimes I have three or four programs open with no problems.
Oh yeah, one of the greatest programs out there for macs is Typestyler. A really great program for doing layouts, and it has some of the greatest text distortions there is. Check it out here.

Try NCS MagiSign plug-in. This one allows to cut directly from Adobe Illustrator and is only for MacOS.
Current version is available for Adobe Illustrator 8-9 and 10 on Mac OS 8.6 until 9.2.

MacOSX version would soon be available.

If you are using an older Mac, SignofNCS plug-in is available as freeware for Adobe Illustrator 5.5-6-7. It is slower, but free of charge.

Visit http://www.magisign.com for further info

In USA, you will find NCS MagiSign near the best distributors and resellers :

I keep at your disposal for any further info.

Thanks everyone, I'm following those leads up.

Using B/W G3, O.S. 8.6, Ai 7....should be okay?

Just download the NCS plug-in corresponding to your plotter and place it into the plug-in folder of your Adobe Illustrator.
Disable the virtual memory of your G3 through the Memory control panel.
Increase the memory allocated to Adobe Imself (do you know how to proceed ?)
Launch Adobe Illustrator. SignofNCS add an output item in the Filter menu.

Download the SignofNCS manual for complete description of the process.

And if ever you feel it too slow for you production, think to run Adobe Illustrator 10 and MagiSign (this would suppose you update your g3 to Mac OS 9.1 and perhaps to add extra memory as AI 10 requires 128 mb for himself ) !

I keep at your disposal for further info.
