Finally after nearly 4 months of hassling with the city...our building permit was granted last Friday.

I only wish it hadn't been such a pain to aquire...what should be a happiness and celebration has been rendered to "Well what ever".

Monday I contact all the sub contractors and hopefully (now that our contractor has more work than he can handle)we will begin construction in about 3 weeks or so.

When this is rolling again I will update the progress on the BB.

Oh did I mention...the city saw fit to remove almost 300 Square feet from our original plans.

I love being a small business owner in this town.

Actually...even with all the sarcasm we are please with the fact that the B.S. is over and now we can tackle the "real life" problems of bringing this building out of the ground. [Smile]

Onward and upward!

Funny about removing 300 sq.ft. Our city has specifications that all new business construction must be no less than 10,000 sq. ft. We did get one recent business in with 8,000 sq. ft. but that's as low as they want to go. Of course, we're working on this one.

Best of luck!

Great news Monte!

We are just now approaching that stage in our latest project. Only imagine telling the building inspector that yes, the mountain we want to build actually houses our shop/ studio/house. Yes, it will be engineered. Yes, we do this type of thing all the time. And yes, the railroad does go through parts of the building. The bridge... well it is engineered to hold up the train with all the people on it. And YES, we are allowed to go over the bumper boat pool. [Smile] And the waterfalls won't get the inside of the structure wet....

Wanna try something like this in YOUR town? Its gonna be a fun year!

Building should be way more fun than getting the many permissions required.

Gee Dan.... Didn't you once say something to the effect that it's easier to just build it without permission and beg forgiveness later?!?!(LOL)

I had assumed that you had the permits long ago. Around here usually a parcel is sold contingent on obtaining all the necessary permits. This puts the builder, developer, banker, lumber supplier, insurance broker, etc. all in the same line applying pressure to the city planner to get things rolling.

Glad you're moving ahaed Monte.

When we built our shop, I took many photo's of details during construction. Several times I've referanced those photo's and have been glad to have them. I've needed to know how some plumbing entered a room or where some electric wires were in a wall.Things that seem so vivid when we build have fuzzy recollections a dozen years later.

I'm a little jealous Monte, but happy for you. Hopefully you can overcome that lost 300 sq.ft with some creative organization. Best of luck.

We had a size limitation also. It turned out they applied it to the foundation size and we added an upstairs over the office and bathroom and called it a sewing room and there was no problem. We gained another 400 sq. ft.

Monte,
Congratulations! Now the problems & frustrations will be much better defined, and have solid visible conclusions!
My shop is almost done, I didn't need any permits or approval from anyone. There is no zoning/planning here.
That has a huge downside; went to a county commissioners meeting last week, a friend lives in a neighborhood of nice large homes (his is over 4000 sq ft). Some acreage near this neighborhood was just purchased by the owner of an auto salvage yard, and he plans to store 250+ junk cars on the lot. Nobody has the authority to stop him!
There is an open pit quarry 1/4 mile from the church I attend. In the past 3 years they have purchased the land on all three sides of us.
We couldn't do anything about that!
I wish I'd had to jump through some hoops to build my shop, just to have some say in what happens around here.
Enjoy the proccess, and keep us posted.

Yeah Bill...I've been in that same circumstance too...In fact it has a lot to do with why I moved from the country back into town.

We looked up one day and found a Trailer on the property next to us ...then another then another...I have nothing against trailers I just didn't want to live in a trailer court.

Then there was the time we had bullets whizzing thru the garden and had to crawl to the house.

All this because ther were no ordinances.

I have no problem with the city and its codes...what I have a problem with are sanctimonious little power mongering jerks that have nothing better to do than to cause grief for the people that pay their wages.

Gawd that felt good! Thanx for the outlet!
