Not sure who this might affect on here, but I just got word Waylon Jennings died. While he might not have been a sign painter, I think being an artistic industry makes it ok, in sort of a cousin way.

For me, Waylon was my pre-teen years defining soundtrack. His greatest hits album was my first tape (as in, one that was MINE and not a share or hand-me-down). I wore out at least one or two tennis rackets, picking at it with a nickel, dead horizontal in the same way ol' Waylon held his leather tooled Telecaster.

One of the best all around albums was his and friend Willie Nelson's album "WWII". On it you will find a song titled "aint is sad when your heroes die".

Sure'nuff Waylon, sure'nuff.

Wow...

I really liked his music. I have several of his CD's. My mom used to make me listen to the one tape... the one with "Amanda" on it. Sheesh...

I sang his one song in a karaoke booth in Monterey when I was on a trip out to the left coast with my ex-wife...

"Mama, don't let your babies grow up to be signmen..

Don't let them stripe cars or letter them trucks...

Make 'em be garbagemen or burger flippers or such..."

Man, that's some real bummer of a note to finish off a great day. He will be missed that is for sure.

Have a great one you all!

In my teens I had to keep my love of country music a secret for fear of peer ridicule. Then Waylon happened and made country hip. I'll miss him.

Waylon was a great songwriter and performer. He was with Buddy Holly during his last performance at the Surf Ballroom in Clearlake Iowa as his bass player. For many years, Waylon carried with him something he said to Buddy in jest after the performance. Buddy told Waylon, "I hope your old bus breaks down", to which Waylon replied, "I hope your old plane crashes". He said this was a heaviness on him for a long time, along with the fact he gave up his seat on the plane to the Big Bopper. Now these friends are together again. He will surely be missed.

My youngest son just called me from his job asking if I want tickets to go with him tonight to see David Allen Coe. If DAC shows, I'm certain it will be tear in the beer time at the concert tonight.

music, and the choice of, has always caused arguments in my house
from way back when the kids were small devo would groan when i played country, blues, jazz or clasical
his tastes are way different to mine, heavy metal is fine but not at 2am when your trying to get a baby to sleep

i was raised by a mother who in her younger days sang country on the radio even
country has always been my favorite 'warm n cuddly' kinda sound... almost like comfort food

for christmas one of my boys bought me a tape to replace one he had 'aquired' from my collection
it was the Highwaymen's first ablbum

during the holidays i spent many happy hours out back playin pool and listening to those old favorites while devo complained loudly from the other room

bruce, i loved that song but never thought of changing the lyrics

waylon will be missed

cheers
