Came up against something I have NO clue how to price...

This past Christmas, I printed up custom address labels for everyone at work. Some have approached me because they liked them so much, they would like to buy more.

I know how much the label sheets cost... 30 per page, approx 41 cents each page... but I have NO CLUE how to figure out the cost of ink (running thru my Epson Photo 870).

I already have the designs done and saved. I haven't ordered labels for a VERY long time, so don't know how much they cost anyways.

Any ideas? THANKS!!

What if you were to find out how much short run prints of labels cost and double that because of the hand lettered feature?

I would call a local print shop and see how much they charge for re-orders since they are set up already ? Call as a customer.

Back in the early days of inkjets they used to give you a price per page for the ink. At that time it was 30 cents per sheet. The carts are so outrageously expensive nowadays - I think they give away the printers so they can sell the ink carts - I'll bet it is more.

This is just a guess, but 40 cents per sheet should cover your ink costs.

If Consumers Union has a website, they probably tested all the standard models and put together a chart. Unfortunately I don't have time to research it this week. Vic G

Dana,

From Epson's website I found out:

Black (T007201) costs $24.95 and covers 370 pages, for .07 per page.
Color (T008201) costs $17.96 and covers 220 pages, for .08 per page (equal coverage on all colors).

Unless this is a very fancy design, that means your labels (in color) would cost:

.41 + .07 +.08 or .56 per page.

I personally would sell them for $3.50 per page, since they are employees and it's set up already. If this were a customer I'd charge for 1 hour time plus $3.50 per page.

Mark Smiths reply is good but those numbers are from Epson at 5% coverage per page and probably at 360dpi or lower I would look at the amount of printing and the quality of the print and rethink your real cost to print. It maybe closer to $2.00 per page.

They do have some kind of report on ink jet carts, but you have to join to see the report.

I would be inclined to go with Mark Smiths estimate because labels don't take a lot of ink. If you do want to pursue, you can join Consumer Reports for one month, get the info, and unsubscribe. Vic G
