This post is prolly gonna only be a "B" rated...
Anyway...
I have a few neat tools that make life easier at work.
One is...a 10 foot long extension cord.Think about it.No coilin...I use it all the time.
Also..I have about 4 pieces a 3/ 4 inch plywood...they have dolly wheels on all 4 corners.
They will support the weight of a motor/transmission...I use em a lot.
I like to have a well oiled floor jack..and jackstands on hand.
Oh...
Lets not forget..one a the best "third hands" you can have in a sign shop....a killerkart...from Hotlines.....
I have an industrial dust mop...it picks up the dog hair.
Dogs are almost worth havin around....no...they are.....definately a bargain..
Does anyone paint the floor in their shop..??
I do....what a treat!

Hey Bro. Boone...

Are we allowed to say volvo on the internet?

Hey, we paint our floor every 4-5 years. We use epoxy floor paint. Holds up great. Stinks like heck when you put it on but it sure does hold up great. Looks good too. Keeps the dust down to a minimum... We are due to repaint this summer. Oh joy.

I have an oval compass I made. That and the regular 18" compass I made... Don't use them as much as I used to but they sure are handy...

We love the taping machine we made ourselves. Patterned after another one, it works awesomely. Don't know how we lasted so long without one.

I have a 10 foot extension cord, too. I use it an awful lot. It has seen better days but I just can't bear to part with it. Someday...

I like my electo-pounce, too. It doesn't get the use that it once did but I would never part with it. Way too handy to have.

Have a great one, Michael... Save your nickels for May...

Hey OP... what kinda tofu were you eating the day you decided to find out IF the electro-pounce would remove warts?!?

Did you experiment with it on anything else?

Oh, wait... I don't think I wanna know the answer to THAT one...

When I had my shop, a few things I REALLY liked were my hand-made, stacking sawhorses; snipper-thingie for cutting edging for alumacor (to wrap around the corners); weber-tool and trusty-dusty palm sander.

And I DIDN'T try to take off warts with any of 'em!

Volvos and vegetables....living in Volvoland, it would be silly not to own one....and vegetables...swedes are a favourite up here.

As to workshop favourites, my little hydraulic stool is a great help, I have one of those old nepalese money belts for most small tools I carry around and as its made of cotton there is no risk of damaging paintwork or whatever you might rub up against...talking of rubbing up against....wait we're talking workshop. My webermade too has been a great help so too has my giant old bandsaw.

LOL geeeeeez you guys are funny! Michael I love crazy floors! Every shop I had I would paint the floor. Some were 'barefoot' prints. (I don't like wearing shoes much so I would step in paint and walk all over the floor) Some were paint splatters of various colors. Some I painted to look like tile squares. One I painted to look like planks of wood. It was great fun. I love floors.

Michael and Bruce, There is a small manufacturing paint company in Haverstraw N.Y. Rockland county named Andrews Paints which makes a great water based epoxy floor paint which gives off less fumes and last just as long as other epoxys. All you have to do is contact them, give them a color sample, and they will make you that color for your floors. My color was almost a Turquoise, simular to the inside of a swimming pool. Their prices in the mid nineties was about 12 bucks a gallon and 50 bucks for 5 gallons. Andrews Paints are a small but reputable company that sells mostly to contractors. Hope that in the future you may contact them for a color that suits your personality.

My floor looks like chimpanzee-art.......painted it myself........oo-oo-oo- aaaaaaaah........aaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh. Ink-blots are really cool.... clouds are nice.....

One of my favorite tools. An old bar stool with the lazy susan-bearing-thingy and a platform on top for spray-painting signs. I just spin it around to paint all four sides.

Cordless drill: The greatest invention of the 20th century.

Portable drum sander: a big time saver

Drywall T-square

Roller stand made from scrap plywood and a rolling pin.

Sand sifting machine made of angle iron, airconditioning duct fittings, screen wire, and electric motor with a large bolt wired to one side of the pulley.

Henry,

I figure that owning a Volvo in Sweden is like owning a Chevy here... I got nothing against them... My parents had 145 wagon. I learned how to drive in that car. It drove nice but broke expensive... bummer.

I forgot about my nifty hydraulic stool. It is great. We have had the ones in our shop for about 7 years now.

Gotta run... Dana has dinner ready. Fishstick sandwiches w/ cheese... mmmmmmm good eatin'!

Have a great one!

Hey Michael,

Adrienne is telling the truth about trying to call you for your birthday. She was in the car with me and we were seriously lost in the wilderness of Southern Los Angeles at about 9:30 at night. I'm trying my damnedest to try and figure out where were and Adrienne decides to catch up on her phone calls!!!

Only kidding A!

BTW, we eventually made it back to the Conclave just in time for Patrick Smith's accordian concert.

bruce..volvos over seas are like ford/chevy here...as for breakdown expenses.....not expensive compared to any american car, with fuel injection, computer control, anti lock and 4 wheel discs.......the 84 that hennie drive daily, was bought 3 years ago for the sum of $600. has no rust, no dents or damage, paint is a faded, interior is like new(couple crackes in the dash, but got one of those dash carpets). has an alpine radio, casette in dash, 6 cd changer in the trunk, 4 great speakers. when bought had 4 brand new michlins, still look good. as for repairs, the reaosn we got the car so cheap, nobody could keep it running. replaced a vacumne advance and rubber hose in the gas tank, total cost $20....since we bought it, i have had to fix small things like seals on the motor(valve cover and cam seal), replace timming belt(this way i know how old it is), replaced a/c compressor, and 2 air mass meters. these are not a cheap part either but i go to u-pull-its and grab em for $10 each, always got a spare. this is volvo # 7(she has had 3 and ive had 4) we have owed in 20 years hennie and i have been together. the only other car she had was a merecedes 280 C 1973, now you wana talk expensive parts!!!!!!!!!!!

IO have so many tools that make my life easier in the shop.

Many are the simple ones or homemade for that special purpose.

We have some six wheel carts 2' X 6' they have two six inch fixed wheels in the middle and a swivel wheel on each corner. They are great fpr any job and literally hold TONS of stuff. I welded up a couple of L brackets that slide into the tubing ends to hold up to 50 sheets of plywood. They have many many miles on them from when we did that 5 year mall job.

We have three large upright red metal tool boxes with all those nifty drawer. They are full of tools. These are on good quality castors of course.

Same goes with all our tools including our welders, table saws, everything come to think of it... they all have heavy duty castors and welded steel frames under them.

Cordless tools are the wonder technoligy of the day. I have a bunch and love them. With all those corless tools a charging bench with multiple plugs are the order of the day too.

And I second the votes for the electrical cords of the right length. I can't have enough of them either as I hate to change cords when I change tools.

We have built our own hydraulic bender for steel. Commercial ones cost a fortune so we built our own. It tool a while to get it right and we are currently making our third version. It doubles as a very powerful automatic vice when the need arises.

Don't ya just love tools!

I don't have a Volvo though. Don't want one either. I do like my new Dodge Dakota though. It's my favorite new tool.

Dont ever build a nice big work table...and put wheels on it...unless the wheels have brakes..
You think its crazy tryin to drive a car without brakes?..Wait till ya try to lay a skinnie lil outline on a 3" letter on a snowmobile hood...and the table is near the slope of the floor drain!
Who pushed the !@#$%^ table?
Does Volvo make tables?

THe first time we put whels on the table saw we didn't have brakes on them. Talk about hard to use. You couldn't push the plywood through without moving the saw!

I have matched shed floor and the tray of my truck im much the same pattern and color, although the shed floor gets less "accidental spillage" from brakes that grab..anyone know how to stop brakes from grabbing lol

Wheels? I'm a big fan of wheels. We have a 4x8 work table for cutting panels, and in good weather we roll it outside; or to roll, as opposed to carry, large signs to the truck for delivery. Scott is a world-class scrounger. Last year he went poking around in the junk pile at an old textile mill and brought back about a dozen heavy-duty casters with solid 4" wheels, which is what's on the work table and other heavy stuff.

My favorite machine is our big scroll bender for brackets. The thing is medieval! It was designed and built by Dom Barravecchia back in 1970, and will bend up to half-inch by two inch mild steel - cold! We call it the DOMinator. That and the other cool tools for metalworking have been great.

BTW, Connecticut has a severe volvo infestation, which goes hand in hand with its ever-increasing population of yuppies, overpaid municipal workers, and Democrats.

Volvo wagons are the Connecticut state car. It's a symbol of middle-class respectability, like a split-level in the suburbs, two kids and a Golden Retriever. We used to joke that every schoolteacher in Connecticut gets a Volvo as part of the hiring package, and in some towns it may be literally true.

Volvo owners in Ct. tend to be conformists; they have government or corporate careers, belong to the PTA, serve on various Town committees, and vote Democratic. Of course being a Democrat in Ct. is not the same as in New York or California; Connecticut Democrats are of the palest dusty rose color, you have to go to Boston, New York or California to find some of the more vibrant shades of pink. They are not "rich" just comfortable; the Volvo isn't a display of money, it's a symbol of conformity. The genuinely well-to-do drive Saabs, Beemers and Benzes, though most of them keep a Volvo wagon around to haul the kids to the yacht club for Wednesday nite regattas. There are rich people who show off their wealth, but not many - most of them try to blend in, and not be too ostentateous. You can't blame them; the state tax structure soaks them as hard as possible, and if they show off the taxes go up.

I know a lot of Volvo owners and a lot of Harley -riding wannabees, and they are NOT the same group, not here anyway.

Leslie,
Judging by your "brakes grabbing" resopnse, my gusse is that you have an early/mid eighties Toyota Ute?
If I'm right in the above guess try some Bendix Brakelene (I think thats the right name) for a temporary fix.
Failing that try consulting your local Toyota dealer and bending the link rod to the proportioning valve probably mounted on the driver side rear chassis above the rear axle.
Those things are sudden death in the wet and only marginally better in the dry.

Funny old world!!!

Volvo's in Sweden are called tractors, and are not seen in the same light as in CT, I have a 945 Turbo station wagon, but they are classed as boring cars, but safe, and useful for families as you said, but without any status I know that if I was to hit a moose or go off the road in the winter here I would prefer to do it in my Volvo rather than my Chevy pick-up, I am fond of my old truck too.

Michael asked about Volvo tables...they make most things up here,

Here's a super modern intercooled Volvo bandsaw

I rigged this toolbox up for myself, before I had one of those little baskets to carry my spray bottles and stuff. This big boy will hold everything I have including a roll of paper towels. I also just bought that vinyl application kit from Gregory (the one with the pouch that holds all the tools) it's a big help when working, no more looking for tools on the ground.

The bottle holders are nothing more than those cup holders that hang on a car window (Walmart). They came in a pack of 4. I took them and cut the "L" part off and bolted them to the box. Works very nice!

Hey Mark,

Tell me what did you use for the tape dispenser and also can you give the dimensions on that application tape dispenser you made from what looks like some scraps of lumber and plywood?

Those things are great ideas and I would love to copy them if you dont mind.

My table is setup the same as yours, mine is 4 x 8 with the speedpress mat and I have a 2' x 6' opening that has a 3/16" glass and 6 flouresant lights underneath. I made 2 application rollers(for different sizes and tacs), I used some electrical pipe, it's expensive but it's the only thing that's close to the diameter of the tape roll. The wooden dowel takes care of the tension very well, I really like my setup!
