A client just brought his truck by for me to have a look at. I installed the vinyl April 23, 2001. It is black and white HP vinyl on a dark green truck. The white vinyl looks perfect. The black is chipping off at the edges ONLY ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. I've seen very old vinl chip off this way and I've seen vinyl shrink and peel but this is less than a year old.
Should have taken a digital photo of it to post. When he brings it back I will. Any ideas?

You raise several questions on this. 1. The vinyl brand. 2. Is this truck parked a lot of the time? 3.Does the affected side face to the South or West if it is parked for long periods? 4. Is this a common problem in hot climates? 5. Surface prep on the vehicle. Last-- method of application--wet or dry-- and if wet, what did you use?
Knowing that dark-colored vehicles can get real hot, and that black absorbs heat way more than white-- all leads me to believe that heat is the main factor at work.

What brand? Did you prep with rapid prep? Clean cheap towels? Did you apply wet or dry? Do they use a pressure washer? Is there evidence of abrasion? One color over the other? Is failing vinyl coming off truck door or is it coming off other vinyl?
If the vehicle is not made by Generous Motors... you might want to tell your customer to sell it and by the correct make of truck..

Bill, you may have something there on the N S E W thing. The sun is murderously hot here. I think there's a hole in the ozone layer over NW Florida. That's the only thing i can think of because if it was a chemical or a pressure washer, why isn't the white coming off?

Wayne, I would also be looking for unusual heat conditions related to the way the vehicle is parked. On my last shop truck, we removed the vinyl from the sides with almost no shadowing. On the tailgate it was burned on so hard that the image is in the paint. The parking lot is situated so that the truck got full western sun on the tailgate. In your case, you are looking for something that would create an oven.
Also, don't rule out the possibility that kids are picking the vinyl. Kids do stuff like that just because they are kids. You can usually tell it you look closely. You may find fingernail dents in the surrounding vinyl. Vic G

Thanks Victor, The vice-president of ATSM is coming by the shop Monday to check it out. I'm stumped on this one because the black vinyl is brittle on that one of the graphic. I didn't think to look for fingernail marks but will when the client brings it back to redo. I agree that it sure seems logical that some ouside force, such as the ones you pointed out, is at work here. I'll keep you posted.
