I would like to see a " How To " on Chalk board lettering, from A to Z!

I've noticed more and more persons joining in on Letterville who want to learn something more to offer their customers in relation to signmaking. I am under the impression that Chalk boards are in relation to this trade, but it seems that doing Chalk boards is fast becoming a big secret for those who do it.
Is there anyone here who has the true letterhead spirit which can show us all how its truly done?

My inquiring mind wants to know!

Yes Joey! I would like to see a 'how to' also. I love chalk board art. There are some really cool artists doing it around the Seattle area. Mostly in the Micro Breweries. Well.....not that I hang out at the breweries.....but hey....that's where I have seen them once or twice. Well maybe three or four times.

Hey Joey & Cheryl,
can't offer pics as most of mine went missing in the last move(long story). But I can help take the mystery out of it, 'chalkboards' that is.
*Mask off the board-application tape is a cheaper alternative to frisket or mask.
*cut the object area out.
*You can also use heavy weight paper or cardboard, cut out and apply later.
*Apply a texture paste-this is available from art stores and gives the surface tooth.
*Now you are on your way; start applying the chalk.
*there are two main methods; one is the rough look, as in Robs recent pic-mainly lines, minimal shading. The other is shaded, just use your fingers. The two styles can also be combined.
*After a layer or two of colour; apply a fixative (only a very light mist spray). 3M makes one or you can also use hair-spray.
*Apply as many layers of colour as it takes to satisfy the effect.
*When you are happy with the product, seal again with fixative. Quite a few coats this time though still lightly.
*Last but not least; apply a lacquer. 3M have 'crystal cote' or whichever brand you prefere.
*peel the mask and you are done!
Tips;
*keep a rag handy for your fingers.
*If working upright-allow plenty of paper under to catch the dust.
*Tap the back of the board to free excess dust rather than blowing.
*Try contrasting colours for definition ie; purple or blue on an apple shading, you'll be surprised.
Also try a thatching effect with the application of chalk-as in sketching. You can either shade this or leave as rough.
ENJOY!
It's a very relaxing past time, can also be time consuming!
I have two old boards still in the shed, I'll take pics of them and post later. One with lobsters was done on card-board, cut and paste. Other is an old drink label straight onto board.

There are different types of chalk. Some are oily and some not. Some that I've tried loose color when the clear is applied.

The nicest boards that I've seen had a phone number on them and when I phoned it was a group of Australians living in Huntington Beach, California. They seem to be shipping them everywhere.

Here we go, thanks Linda! Anyone else want to shed some light as to what chalk exactly is available for this kind of art and maybe some photos to go along with the " How To "

Maybe Dave Draper, Adrienne or Jerry Mathel could do an article in SBI in regards to this specialized art. Seeing that Draper could convince SBI to include church stain-glass as if we all are capable of that kind of art and time that goes into it, this should be easy!
I know there are many more persons other then just Cheryl and I who want to join in on the fun of doing Chalk boards if only to do them during a short vacation.
In the six or so years I've been associated with this BB, I have never seen one post relating to this specialized top secret kind of art but yet have seen many Chalk boards done very nicely right here at every Latte'shop I've been to.

Why learn pinstriping which has no letters when we could all use this kind of work to satisfy our need for making extra money with our fingers like we did in grammer school!

I'd like to see it too Joey.

I get more enjoyment out of doing stuff where I can get dirty (or in this case, dusty).

I was thinking the same thing Joey!

I have wanted to try this for some time...remember Chaulky? He is another one I havn't seen posting here for a couple of years.

There was a couple of Australians gals doing this years ago...I thought it looked like a lot of fun, and just well...different!

But, I too had a lot of questions regarding types of chalk, sealing the board, etc.

I'd be happy to do an article for SBI if Linda wouldn't mind.

I did some chalk board art for a cafe here... that was a couple of years ago.. Doing it again, it would look better *grin* I was working onto the blackboard vinyl, which is wonderful stuff to work onto.... I used pastels (the derwent variety), and found that when you rubbed it off again, it left a shadow.. I'm nut sure whether that was the vinyl, or the pastels.. but anyway Will there be anything on chalk board art at the oklahoma, or georgia meets? At the meet in Brisbane, in 1998, there was a blackboard set up, and the set of pastels/chalk there too, and anyone who wanted to, could add a picture to the board.. I thought it was a great idea. Is this an option? Just a thought.

Hi All,
the main brands here are Faber Castell being the best and most expensive. These are great for defining lines or you can now buy in pencil form for definition.Mungyo are a great allrounder and medium expense-not crash hot for fine outlines. Derwent also have chalks or rather 'pastels' as they are called. There are a few oil based ones as well though I have only experimented with these.
Rick if you are loosing colour you have either; not sealed with enough 'layers' of fixative or you are to close when spraying\heavy handed. You need to build up mist coats of the fixative first.Try the crystal Cote sealer.
Adrienne, go for it! You can use plain chalkboard paint but the 'texture' paint gives a much better surface to work on. You can also layer this for a raised 3D effect. It's great stuff. Any Art Craft store will point you in the right direction there. I use 'Jo Sonya' she designed a range of folk art paint etc. It's made by Chroma Australia, though they have a U.S.A contact no. 717 626 8866. There is also a general purpose base, though I can't think of the name right now.

Strange question, but here goes.

We have a place here that manufactures chalk boards and dry-erase boards. For this chalk board stuff... do you use the black board or the green chalk board? does it matter?

Hi Chris,
I would presume that both the black and green are the same surface quality as they are here (no difference only the colours). Just depends on the colours that you will be using in pastels.
P.S Did you sort out 'font navigator' yet?

I'll go to work on it straight away,
